For reference, this for data only and this for data and voice (but with a Hong Kong number) are what I'm talking about. You'll pay more but depending on your needs it may be worth the extra to not have to deal with a VPN.

Perhaps the best hotel I stayed at (in my life) was a prison-looking $55 / night place in Dongguan. The rooms were surprisingly huge with a giant bathtub, a chaise-lounge, and a free breakfast buffet. In contrast, a $45 / night room in Shenzhen came with a cockroach and you'd get an electric shock every time you flipped the lights on haha. It was mostly comfortable besides those things.
