There is never going to be a deterministic end-all be-all diagnostic criteron for schizophrenia or any mental illness, especially for the fact that we can't reductionistically apply everything into the same framework of categorization. This the the inherent flaw of the DSM that it's medical model reductionistic. Nevertheless there is necessity to adhere to the structural format of the DSM in which can skew and conceptualize bias onto the psychopathology. The DSM is first and foremost a reference book, a working guide, one with blind spots, but it is nothing more of that.
A good book that deconstruct and analysis the methodology of the DSM is: Classifying Psychopathology (2014) from MIT Press.
