For starters, knitters use two needles; crocheters use one hook. Know which one she needs or the gift will be useless!

If you're looking for crochet hooks, the Clover sets are amazing and will literally change the way she crochets. I swear they're imbued with magic or something. Some people prefer the Amour, some swear by the Soft Touch, both are awesome. There's also a bamboo set for people who prefer working with bamboo, though I've never used them myself. You can buy individual hooks, but any of the sets I've linked to will include the majority of sizes she'd need for everyday projects.

If you prefer to buy in person, you can get the Amour at AC Moore or the Soft Touch at Michaels; JoAnn carries both lines.

If you were actually looking for needles and not hooks, let me know and I'll share info on that.

Amazon, seriously. This is what I got and I love them to pieces and didn't break the bank: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0016N3PKW/ref=sxts1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474868981&sr=1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65

I highly recommend getting ergonomic hooks. My favorites are either Clover Soft Touch or Amour hooks.

Yes. But I would strongly suggest buying an Amour and a Soft Touch in whatever size you use most often and using each for a while to see which you prefer. I have this Soft Touch set I bought like 3.5 years ago and I love them and use them regularly. I don't find the Amour nearly as comfortable, but I'm absolutely certain other folks feel the opposite way.

Spending $40 on a set of hooks where each individual one would be six or eight bucks on its own is so very worth it, even if you have to save up for it.

There's nothing at all wrong with the Boye hooks you can buy anywhere. Functionally they are pretty much the same. But I simply cannot use the regular aluminum hooks anymore; they hurt my hands far too much. These Clover hooks keep me going. I would have had to give up crocheting entirely if it wasn't for these hooks.

I just got this Clover Soft Touch set off Amazon:

It's really not a bad price considering the hooks are usually $5+ individually at craft stores, and it comes with a nice case. I like having all my hooks match. They're really smooth to use though the shaft is a little shorter than my old Boye Crochet Dude padded hooks, but I got used to it quickly.

Not entering, because I crochet myself, but I wanted to make a couple of suggestions to help with your crocheting. :)

I've heard lots of great things about bamboo, but I haven't tried it myself.

Personally, I use these. They have a good grip, and while they are shorter than most other hooks, they are much easier on the hands than standard hooks. :)

I'm a sucker for soft yarns and I have a partial skein similar to this, so you should try it out for a hat or something. :D

I'm a huge fan of the Clover hooks (the flat handle ones). I've tried a lot of different hooks, even the fancy wood ergonomic ones and I always end up back with my Clover hooks.

Here's a set of them

You could also buy the case and hooks separately too.
