There are quality tanto blades, off the top o my head the ones that come to mind are from cold steel

Rawles Voyager XL by Cold Steel: Beast of a knife, chisel ground so not great for iunno, whittling, but also very easy to sharpen (you only need to sharpen one side). Made out of CTS-XHP, which is comparable to S30v. A quality steel.Discontinued though. Tri-ad lock, like a lockback. Slower to unlock, but the strongest lock design out there.

Recon 1 by Cold steel: More tactical, they make them in CTS-XHP. Also tri ad lock. Still make them. https://www.amazon.com/4005044-Cold-Steel-Recon-Folding/dp/B00TBCBTY4

Code 4 also by cold steel:

Basically a very thin version, XHP, lock back, etc.

Beyond that there's benchmade and Zero tolerance who probably make damn fine tanto folders but definitely for more than $100. Same goes for Kizer and medford other "boutique" knife brands, they're gonna cost you.

Rounding out the list there's the Ruike P138, a relatively new but very well regarded brand (they're Fenix, the flashlight company's knife brand) https://www.fenixoutfitters.com/fenix-ruike-knife-folding-p138/, liner lock, Sandvik steel which is a quality mid tier, a bit better than 440C

Speaking of 440C, as always the cheapest thing you can get that's decent is probably a Ganzo. 440C is still superior to AUS-8 and 8Cr13Mov and 440A/420 (which unfortunately is what Kershaw and CRKT tend to make their knives out of)

Just look through their catalog and search whatever you like on Gearbest.com to buy. They're usually from 12-18 bucks, 440C, and axis lock. It'll take a month to get to you shipped from overseas but they're decent and better than most of the knives you'd find in a walmart.

Something tanto + a knife that can take an abuse = Cold Steel.

I would recommend Recon 1 for a folder and Cold Steel Kobun for a fixed blade.
