The Bogleheads investment philosophy videos are about as subdued as you can get.

The Bogleheads list of recommended books is also good.

The thickest and most complex investment books are often about questionable strategies like technical analysis and derivatives trading. They are textbook-sized, but they're not books I'd recommend. Investing in index funds is a pretty straightforward topic and that's not a bad thing.

You might like Common Sense on Mutual Funds by John Bogle or A Random Walk Down Wall Street by Burton Malkiel since they are less sensational.
