This mixture is as close as you can legally get to Agent Orange. I use it on my 200ft gravel drive, paver walkways, along fencerows, under my deck and anywhere else I don't want stuff to grow. Lasts for weeks, maybe months depending on rainfall:

  • 6oz per gallon Glyphosate (commonly known as Round-Up)
  • 12oz per gallon of Pramitol 25E
  • 6oz per gallon Triclopyr 4E
  • A few drops of Dawn or any other dish soap

Glyphosate and Triclopyr attack through the leaves, Pramitol attacks through the roots and acts as a ground sterilizer so new plants won't grow. The Triclopyr is optional, I simply include it because it's more effective at killing woody plants (young trees or other brush) than Glyphosate.

Dish soap helps break the surface tension so it sticks to the leaves better. It won't kill quickly, but you'll notice the plants yellowing and drying up within a few days. Two weeks, they will be brown and dead.

A few things to note. Don't spray around the base of any trees or other plants you don't want dead. It will kill a 50yr old oak tree as easily as it kills dandelions. Also, don't leave this stuff sitting in your pump-sprayer for weeks, anything leftover needs to be used up within a day or two. Not sure what chemical reaction is going on there, but if you leave it in your sprayer too long, it will start to crystallize and clog everything up.

EDIT: These chemicals are all available at Tractor Supply if you have one nearby. If your county has a noxious weeds department, you can usually get it from there as well. The Pramitol is available in a granular form as well so you could use it in a push-spreader.

If you want to do it the quick way, prices will vary based on your area, how long you rent it for, size of the machine, etc. Roughly $50-$300. After you remove the existing coat of everything, you're pretty much good to go, and you'll only have the cost of the seed and water for irrigation.

If you want to do it the cheap but long way, use glyphosate with a pump sprayer to kill everything off. Once it's killed off, mow it super low, as low to the ground as your mower will physically go, and bag the clippings. At least 2 weeks after you spray, you can seed. Don't till the soil. Rake the new seed in or cover it with topsoil for best results. $35 + $seed

I use this in a sprayer (I mix a higher concentration though): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ARKS3XO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Always kills grass and weeds, though don't use it if you have a grass lawn as it will kill whatever it touches. I usually have to retreat every 3-6 months as things come back here and there. Way cheaper than Roundup too which has never worked for me.

Grab one of these sprayers off amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039EEN0M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and a gallon of the goods

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ARKS3XO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

A splash of the goods and fill the rest up with water and away you go.

I have a ton of cracks and I spray every couple months. I kind of like doing it too.

Glyphosate is glyphosate. You just need to check your math that you are applying the same amount of active ingredient.

I used this to kill my entire lawn. Cheaper

It is recommended that you overseed in the fall. If you overseed in the spring, the grass may not survive the summer.

Install sod if it is within the budget.

If you still want to overseed in the spring, I would first hire someone to core aerate.

If you have no good grass left, kill everything with round up (glyphosate).

After everything is dead, then you can overseed. Top it off with peat moss. Then use tenacity to deal with the weeds. And water like crazy.

> round up pesticides (conveniently also patented by Monsanto)

The patent expired in 2001. You can easily buy generic glyphosate.

>Buy the stuff you mix with water and double up.

When you buy concentrate you have control over the mixture strength. Also I would buy offbrand as namebrand Roundup is pretty damn expensive.

I buy this:

>as hard to get rid of as Japanese knotweed

If you're having trouble with some, Japanese knotweed is reasonably easy to get rid of since it's not pollinating it hasn't developed any resistances. It just takes about 2 years and a lot of collateral damage https://www.amazon.com/Compare-N-Save-Concentrate-41-Percent-Glyphosate-1-Gallon/dp/B00ARKS3XO . Though I guess you can look at it this way: the \>10ft tall trees will survive and everything else was already being choked to death by the knotweed.

Appreciate the quick response.

Here's what I'm ordering from Amazon - 41%

Is that strong enough?

Thanks again.

Buy some Glysophate and a pump sprayer and spray that area, in 3 weeks it will be 100% dead. Lay down some pre-emergents and monitor for any weeds that sprout after. You'll want to till the ground after the weeds die in 3 weeks before you lay the pre-emergents.

This glysophate needs a surfactant and needs to be mixed with water accordingly.

Weedkiller man. Easy. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ARKS3XO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 a fraction of the cost of retail stores, just get a sprayer and go to town.

u/lightningnonevent · 1 pointr/femalefashionadvice

Oooh, don't buy ready to use. It's usually much more diluted. I recommend this mixed a little over a 2% ratio. Also, you can add a splash/shot of vinegar to the mix if your city has hard water.

u/anderhole · 1 pointr/lawncare

I used this to kill

I didn't keep exact track of everything but some of the supplies I ordered on Amazon and my friend sold me the seed for $40 so I'm guessing that was a deal. I have the bag still so I need to look it up and find what it would have cost.

u/DyslexicHobo · 1 pointr/lawncare

The Amazon price is what I'm referring to. For example, this 1 gallon glyphosate product (41%)
is only $20. If we compare that to this RoundUp Pro Concentrate 2.5 gallon 50.2% glyphosate product, the RoundUp is still much more expensive per gram of glyphosate. Is the RoundUp better for other reasons, or is the cheaper stuff just as good, assuming you mix the end-product to the same concentration?

u/jdsmn21 · 1 pointr/lawncare

This is the exact stuff I used, however I paid about $16 USD for a US gallon at Menards, one of our regional big box home improvement stores.

I tried to look up glyphosate using amazon.ca - not having the best of luck. Is Roundup legal up there?

You may be right - and seems logical. However, the saplings and vines I used it on haven't shown green growth since applying this spring.

Where do you live? It's hard to make recommendations without knowing this information but I can give you my knowledge from my experience. I live in the northwest US and about a year ago I completely re-did my backyard. Here's basically the process I used:

  1. Cut grass as short as you can.
  2. Use herbicide with 41-Percent Glyphosate like this.
  3. Wait 2-3 weeks. Rake out dead weeds/grass. May need to till depending on soil.
  4. Most people will tell you you should get a soil test done in case you need to amend the soil. Not always necessary though.
  5. Amend soil as needed.
  6. Rake soil flat. You may find something like this useful. Remove any remaining large chunks of dirt and grass.
  7. Wait until early-mid September, throw down grass seed. It is recommended to have ~20 seeds per square inch, but that's actually quite a bit so just do your best to put a lot down, evenly.
  8. Lite raking to mix in seeds with dirt.
  9. Put a good 1/4-1/2" of peat moss over-top of all seeds.
  10. Water. Don't let the seeds dry out. First 2-3 weeks you should water 2-3 times a day depending on weather.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'll do my best to help you out.
