Compared to begleri, the asalato is a lot less technical. The main challenges with playing asalato are:

  1. Having a good sense of rhythm
  2. Doing different things with both hands at the same time
  3. Some technical stuff
  4. Scarce resources online for learning

You'll be able to do a basic beat pretty quickly, especially with prior technical skills from begleri. Once you get past the surface level, you'll start getting involved with time signatures which is a whole other can of worms.

As far as buying a set, my recommendation is to buy these:

You can buy cheaper plastic ones on Amazon, but they are very inferior to these ones and will probably fall apart quickly.

If you want something quieter, get these in the 50mm size:

The ones made out of gourds are cool and they have a great sound, but I think it's better to wait until you have the basics down and know that you enjoy this hobby before investing in them. They're a bit more difficult to play and they are more prone to breaking (especially by beginners who typically hit them too hard).
