Check the post code. If your mobo has a little 2-digit LCD on it, the post code will be shown there. If not, you need a case speaker to translate the post code from the beeps.

Did your mobo come with a error code speaker?

If not no big deal, they're pretty cheap

If it did, and you've got it plugged in make sure it's plugged in in the proper place, most boards have a dedicated location for them separate from the header pins to avoid confusion.

If it's plugged in in the correct spot, make sure it's fully seated on the pins.

If all else fails, buy a replacement via the link I supplied or your retailer of choice, and plug it in. If it's still not working I'd probably consider it a issue with the mobo. Idk if you could RMA for something like that, especially if everything else that matters works.

Not all motherboards have a speaker built in. And in the case of ITX motherboards, I would guess none of them do. But I just looked up the manual for your board and it has a 4 pin header for a speaker. Looks like it is just to the side of the front panel headers (power/reset/hdd light).

You need to buy one of these if you want to hear any of the beeps. It would just hang off the motherboard, no need to attach it to the case.

I'm assuming you don't have any debug LEDs on the board, nor a motherboard speaker ? If not, get a speaker and see if the board is trying to tell you what's wrong.
You could post a couple of pics of the board with everything plugged in. Might spot something.

Does the case have an HDD light? It's usually red and connects to the motherboard jumper block the power switch and power led connect. Did you unhook the power for video card and not plug it? The reason I'm asking about the HDD light is that if the light is blinking then that means the system is still booting and that CPU/Memory/Motherboard is still working. Is there a speaker hooked up to the jumper block that I mentioned earlier? If you have one then you should be hearing beeps. Those beeps are morse code like and you can look them up in the motherboard manual. Also did you try what u/Swissykin said? Turn off power supply switch (or unplug) what until power led on motherboard turns off. Pull battery wait 2 min then try it again.

it's unfortunate that you don't have a speaker dongle to check for beeps. The standard operating procedure when you can't boot far enough for screen output is to just remove everything until it does. So, no usb stuff including keyboard, no hard drive, no gfx, one stick of ram.

If that doesn't light up, you can try clearing the bios with the CMOS CLEAR jumper (don't forget to put it back afterwards).

The VGA list is just what MSI tested. If they would not even support their own cards and this would become public, MSI would sell a lot less Motherboads to the distributers.

Check all connections a second time just in case. You probably need an internal speaker for the Motherboard to identify the problem.

Most motherboards do have a header for the PC speaker, which is actually more like a beeper, but modern cases no longer come fitted with them.

If you want a beeper, you have to buy them separately.

Well hardware rarely purely dies. That is to say, when you turn the switch on, does anything happen? When you hit the power button, does anything happen? Every single time you do a thing, it has a chance to reply back. that does not mean the Motherboard is working just that those headers are getting power..

You could try a different Video card or make sure you video card works in a different machine..


You could try pulling the whole motherboard out and putting it on a box and breadboarding it to see if you can get everything to work..


Again you can try different Video ports / cables /monitor to see if that helps..

Yeah I had no idea the thermal paste that came pre-applied on the CPU Cooler was so sticky it's absurd that it can rip the CPU out of the socket. For a motherboard speaker it doesn't have to be expensive you only need it to hear post codes so this would likely suffice

plug it in and see what kind of beeps you get. you should find what they mean on Asrock's website.

You need a PC Buzzer or a Dr. Debug POST card to be able to know what the motherboard is doing. You didn't specify your motherboard so I wouldn't know if yours came with a POST readout or not.

For PC ownership of any sort, I'd highly recommend purchasing one of these for situations like this, it plugs in above the front panel header. That being said, have you tried testing or replacing the CMOS battery yet? You can use a multimeter with DC voltage settings (also nice thing to have around for diagnosing) and see if the battery is below 2.9V after pulling it from the board. It's a pretty inexpensive item to have handy since they have a decent shelf life. Heat can degrade the battery rapidly and there's plenty of heat sources in a PC.

I would try to use the mem test/safe button on the motherboard. Many lower end motherboards don't have these and iot looks like yours doesn't. I have had problems with memory not defaulting to the correct speed. You can try just running one stick of ram to get to see if you can get to the bios. Also try following the motherboard manual's instructions for reseting the bios to default. Usually involves booting with battery out or switching a jumper then turning it on and then powering it off and putting the jumper back before restarting.

Make sure to try booting with the absolute minimum number of devices plugged in. One stick of ram, no hard drive only the monitor plugged in without keyboard and mouse to see if you can get bios to come up. If one stick of ram does work but with two it doesn't boot, try lower ram speed, sometimes ram will only run at lower speeds than advertised because of compatibility.

If nothing you do seems to work after double checking everything and trying that.... I would send the motherboard back and if that doesn't work i would try different ram. If you have known good parts from another sytem, it's worth trying those, video card, ram, cpu.

That's generally part of the case. Though many boards have integrated speakers, these days.

Most (decent) cases come with one. If you still have the accessory box/bag, check it out.

Typically when there is a boot error there is a industry standard where the mobo will start beeping a certain pattern to indicate the error, I would suggest getting a beeper (really cheap and should work with any mobo).

Something like that, even if it doesn't solve your exact problem it will still help you one day.

It's just $5, like /u/jdorje said, and should give you insight into what's going on. I had a similar problem recently, and it turned out to be a RAM issue. With the beep codes, I was able to figure that out right after pressing the power button, and it saved a lot of time messing around with stuff.

Rushing or panicking is never what you want to do with PC issues. If you wait a few days and get the speaker, it will give you much more info to help you and people like us figure out whats wrong.

If you haven't touched the hardware, you'll want to start by removing the RAM and then putting it back in the same slots as before. When people say they "reseat connections," this is usually included in the list of connections that are reseated. I'm assuming you were talking about all the power connectors.

It's also worth mentioning that some motherboards are sold without a speaker, and thus can't emit beep codes. If reseating your RAM doesn't work, you might want to buy one and hook it up to your board and see if it's trying to beep a code or not.

   Most likely things that could be dead would be mobo, RAM, CPU.

Usually when there is no video output it is a memory issue, a small piezo speaker is like $2 on amazon and would let you know what is wrong, just look online for your motherboard beep codes.


The exact thing happened to my with an ASRock motherboard, it would not post, the fans would start spinning and nothing from the motherboard VGA or the video card, so I hooked up the speaker and turns out there was a memory error, swapped the sticks to some of the ones listed as compatible on the website and problem solved.

I'm actually not talking about regular speakers, but a speaker like this that connects to your motherboard. It generally comes with most motherboards, but you can buy one for cheap here.

It will give off beeps of whatever error may be causing a problem during boot, and you can then check the manual for your motherboard to see what the beep means.

Buy one of these and attach it to your board. It goes into the same array of pins where there power/reset sw goes. It will beep in a pattern, which allows you to diagnose why it won't boot, instead of guessing. That should at least allow you to confirm if it is the CPU. Might save you some hassle.

When you're trying to get a computer to just POST you remove the memory , video card and all storage devices to force the motherboard to "display" BIOS codes. If BIOS codes are displayed then the motherboard is still partially working. If none are displayed then you may need an internal speaker or the motherboard is dead.

You should remove the video card and plug the monitor into the motherboard without using a conversion cable of any kind. At this point in time the integrated graphics are much more reliable than the ATI Radeon X1950 PRO video card.

Without memory the motherboard should screech at you and with out storage the motherboard should take you to the BIOS.

Not all motherboards allow you to hear beep codes through the headphones. A motherboard speaker going into the speaker pins on your motherboard is better. There may well be beep codes, you're just not hearing it. Edit: One of these.
