Others have already posted to look into "color theory" and some great books. Some other items for your tool box:

A color wheel - basic one here. The back of this wheel shows basic color schemes (like complementary, triadic, tetradic) that can be a first step to selecting a pallette for your designs.

Go to Sherwin-Williams if you have one near you and buy their color fan deck. Theirs is well organized and having all the choices at once will help you guage whether a specific blue, for example, is warmer or coolor than you want. Even if you don't purchase SW paint, many paint retailers can match from the SW color code. If you really want to splurge, you can get a Pantone color fan, but just starting out it's probably overkill.

this video, while boring, contains a good explanation of how to approach mixing colours.

A colour wheel is always a useful thing to have on hand.

Apart from that, practice! Experiment and learn what ratios to mix your paints in to get certain colours. Look closely at the colour you are trying to match - eventually your eye will become better at identifying what traces of colour are in 'greys' or 'blacks' since very rarely do artists use just a mixture of black and white: instead they use tints and shades. Find the base colour, approximately, and you will have a much easier time mixing up the right colours.

The Amazing Colour Wheel!

I chose this as I thought while somewhat boring it does have a purpose. Being a designer myself I am always wondering what colours work well and always stick to my same schemes. This would help to imagine new colour ideas without being too difficult to use.

PS. Have fun in your new job.

As it has been said, get him a basic set. If you get him all the colors, he won't want to mix his own. I would also get him a color wheel. You can get some that also has the color schemes on it( the one I have has it on the back). Some colors look better together than others, and these are called color schemes. Complimentary colors work well together and they are the colors on opposite sides of the color wheel. There are several color schemes, and the color wheel I got has them on the back.
