I'm in the same boat. I've found countless books on feature structure/writing, but hardly anything about how to write/plan a damn tv show lol So far, I really like Crafty TV Writing, it gives you a general run-down about what makes a good tv series, coming up with episode ideas, different approaches to the pilot, and a bunch of other cool stuff. It seems more geared towards sitcoms than dramatic TV, but I still think it's worth checking out.

I went to film school in New York, and saw an interesting job listing that turned out to be at ABC, applied for it, and got the job. I used my contacts from that first job to get another, better job later.

I wish I had some good advice to offer an aspiring writer, but I don't really. You might want to check out the book Crafty TV Writing: it has a lot of discussion of practical issues like getting an agent and getting people to read your spec scripts and such.

I like this book, Craft TV Writing.

And his blog which will take me forever to slog through.

THIS however, is the best masterclass on writing TV Specs I've ever read. Jane Espenson is a tv writing genius, and her portfolio is diverse and long lasting. I went through it all in about 3 weeks, and learned soooooo much.
