Thanks! I'll keep this one in mind. Seems like I'd still need a solution for sending the MIDI Clock to the Organelle (which only has USB ports), but I think I may have found the solution:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JLU26W/?coliid=I2V4VWF1T1AZXO&colid=2NW1QM8CI6ZYC&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

This lil guy acts as an interface to send MIDI In to (or run MIDI Out of) a computer, which the Organelle is.

Can anyone smarter than me confirm that it would work with the Organelle's on-board Linux-based computer?

You could use an iOS device like an iPhone or an iPad as a sound engine. You'll need the Apple USB adapter, and use a synth app that supports MIDI. If your keyboard has the normal MIDI DIN connector, you can get a USB->Midi adapter like this Roland.

I use this MIDI interface with my Yamaha keyboard, and it works like a charm in Ableton. Not sure with others but I assume it would work just fine.

I've been using this (admittedly not very frequently, but longer than 3 months)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JLU26W/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

seems to have good reviews... was very easy to setup in ableton with a super old, cheap casio keyboard I have

I know almost nothing about MIDI.

I have an accordion with a MIDI in/out port (Roland FR-3x).

I have a Macbook Pro 2013, 13".

I suspect I can do cool things with these things in combination.

I got one of these

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JLU26W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and connected the two successfully. I played around with Software instruments in Garageband and it was fun.

However, the sound was crackly and I suspect it was due to the relatively cheap interface.

What should I buy (for hopefully not much more than $100 or so) that can allow me to interface my instrument with my computer with better quality?

I have no idea what I'm doing with MIDI so any pointers you can give in general are welcome along with hardware recommendations, and rationale to explain those recommendations.

Thanks!

Well no one gave me an answer. So I took a chance, bought a different one after sifting through reviews/questions, and found one that works!

You need:

"Lighting to USB 3 Camera Adapter" ($39)

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0W2AM/A/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter?fnode=97

and if your keyboard doesn't already output MIDI over USB,

"CREATIVE EMU XMIDI 1X1 USB MIDI Interface" ($29)

https://www.amazon.com/CREATIVE-EMU-XMIDI-MIDI-Interface/dp/B000JLU26W/r

There are knockoff adapters that could reduce your total cost from $70 down to like $20, but they don't always work right. I have had the above-listed adapters for three years now, used daily with iPad and iPhone, and they work really well. With current-gen iOS devices, latency is very low, and the experience is overall very good.

To start I highly suggest using Qlab to run your audio file (2 channels is free on Mac)

Then to set up the ion you would follow these steps:

  1. Press [Setup]. Go to the setup display

  2. Press [6] [Enter]. Selects the Options Settings menu

  3. Press [1] [Enter]. Prompt reads: Select MIDI channel (#1 through
    16)

  4. Choose 1

  5. Press [Enter]. Completes the ETC MIDI setup

  6. Hook up Midi Cables to Computer and Light Board (Note sometimes the in on those midi controllers the IN and OUT are what the cable is doing not what port they should be plugged into) You can use something like this

  7. Open Qlab insert a Midi Cue, go to settings, set your destination to be your usb midi controller. Then I believe you leave it at musical midi and just choose program change, channel 1 and then use value 1-127 for the cue you want to fire.

I use mine with Reaper all the time, same basic principle. First thing you'll need is a Midi to USB adapter like this. I have it, works great.

The next step like what theg33kshow said would be to get some software so you can monitor the signal coming through whenever you make changes so you know how to assign commands. Reaper has a function where it will "listen" for the button from me, I bet Logic has something like that too. Once you know that the FCB is sending info correctly to your Mac it should be a fairly easy process.

I have a PX-130, and just by plugging it in to the PC it installs the necessary drivers and works right away.

You can try to put it into Storage Mode (where it shows up like USB storage instead of a MIDI device) To do this Hold down FUNCTION and then USB DEVICE MODE while it's plugged in. Lights will start blinking and your computer will detect a new USB storage device. After this works, hit FUNCTION to put it back into normal MIDI/Piano mode.

If you're getting some kind of USB Device not recognized error, I would recommend downloading the Drivers you found. It will show up in your MIDI devices as "CASIO USB-MIDI" once it's recognized. If they don't work just uninstall them.

http://support.casio.com/en/support/download.php?cid=008&pid=72

If NONE of that works, I would recommend just getting an EMU XMIDI 1X1 USB Interface Cable, and just connect it to the MIDI In/Out on the back of your keyboard.

The CASIO USB-MIDI always gives me trouble with latency at high polyphony. Unfortunately the PX-130 doesn't have MIDI In/Out jacks.

Alright, I tried this, I get no output on my speakers when I run it through FL. I have the ports right, and I tried all channels. Just to avoid confusion, let me notate some things

Cable A - runs from my keyboard to laptop. It is USB-MIDI to USB.

Cable B - runs from my laptop to the synth. It is USB to DIN-MIDI (5-pin port).

I have MIDI input enabled on FL, from my keyboard (it works for other instruments). I have a MIDI output "instrument" on FL, which is supposed to be controlled by the keyboard. The MIDI output "instrument" is set up so that the port matches up with my output device (i.e the synth), and the channel matches the one I set on my synth following your instructions. I get output while playing the synth directly, so it's not an issue with aux-ing out to speakers. Cable B lights up when I hit any note on my keyboard, so I think it is sending data correctly. Cable A seems to be working as FL can detect the notes correctly (and Cable B is additional evidence).

I suspect it's an issue with cable B not having all ports connected to something. Cable B looks like it is some iteration of this. Should I be facing a problem if the MIDI-in part of that cable isn't plugged to anything?

This one's nice. Not the least expensive, but it has good ratings. I have it, and it works pretty well.

u/AMusicianNamedJoe · 1 pointr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

I have an Alesis DM7X Kit (Addictive Drums 2, Windows 7, x64 Reaper) and I've never had this happen to me before.

Does your module have MIDI In/Out ports? I would recommend trying to use them with a midi interface and see if the problem still occurs. (E-mu X-Midi Tab is a good one).

u/k_uger · 0 pointsr/raspberry_pi

If it were me, I would compromise and get this Creative cable from amazon. It's $33 and has consistently good reviews.

Also it should be plug and play. I think the Yamaha might require drivers? Not sure.

Also if it doesn't end up working with raspi, amazon returns are easy. Just play dumb and say it doesn't work. They pay shipping.

u/omegahalom · 0 pointsr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

OK, i already have the MIDI compatible instruments and software and this is one of the only cables i found on amazon with decent reviews of mostly 5 and 4 stars. The cheaper ones were neck and neck with 5 and 1 star. Is this a good choice or am i paying too much?
