Samsung 850 Evo SSD (BIG speed boost over your 5400 RPM HDD) and then more RAM (8 or 16 GB).

Problem may be that, for the cost of upgrading, you're better off buying a newer MacBook and selling the old one.

8 GB of Crucial RAM will run roughly $70 while 250 GB SSD will cost $139

RAM and SSD. Samsung 850 Evos are the best sata SSDs on the market that are not overpriced Intel shit. A 250 GB drives runs $90.

As for RAM, it uses DDR3 SODIMM @ 1066 Mhz, it is a little picky on this regard. RAM today runs around $5 a GB for cards compatible with your MacBook. Here is 8 GB for $40.

Your machine takes 8 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM. Here's a good price: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LTBJFM/

Or get it for free here: http://www.downloadmoreram.com

Is that something that would have come with a 2010 MacBook Pro? Also, if you're willing to pay above retail why wouldn't you just look online?

Edit: like this 1 pack or this 2 pack

Don't spend a lot of money, Here is a 120GB for $64
http://amzn.com/B00A1ZTZOG

Do a fresh install of Yosemite when it comes out, transfer only what you need, use web based email and big photo libraries music libraries keep on an external USB

Also max out the RAM EveryMac says you can do 8GB (2x 4GB)

You'll need to search for your model. Swapping the parts is really easy. If you don't already have one, make a Time Machine backup. Then, after swapping the parts, just pop in your OSX disk and restore from the backup.

Edit: I did a clean OSX install and then just restored the stuff I wanted, but if you're not sure what to do them just do a full restoration. It's easier.

Edit 2: There is a lengthy thread about this in the sub somewhere if you want to search for it.

It took me about an hour to complete which involved me forgetting to reconnect the battery cable so I had to reopen it for that.

edit: forgot to link tutorials

Whatever you do, do not go to a shop to do it for you, they'll charge you wayyy too much for 20 minutes of work. Here is a tutorial on upgrading your RAM and switching to an SSD. And [here] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LTBJFM/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_31ATub10CX7FM) is a cheap, reliable RAM upgrade kit.

u/icedearth15324 · 2 pointsr/mac

It won't be the fastest machine in the world, but upping the memory would make it somewhat usable. I've recently decommissioned some macs from 2008/2009 and they still worked pretty well, just not fast enough for everyday stuff.

If the imac was free, and you don't need to buy anything else to do what you want, then for $75 you can have a decently useable computer.

i don't think the RAM from your link is compatible. try this one

u/CheapBastid · 1 pointr/apple

FYI, that link to the Crucial is not compatible with Mid 2009 MacBook Pros which need 1066 and won't run on 1600.

This one should work.

u/mdedm · 1 pointr/mac

I ordered this exact product: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LTBJFM

u/thinkbox · 1 pointr/mac

Well, there is a website called www.fixit.com that has walkthroughs and tutorials that can help for almost anything you would want to do.

I got this RAM.

>Pretty easy to install, just follow this guide.

I got this SSD.
>You can replace the old drive you have in your computer with this guide, or you can double your data (see below).

I got this CD drive caddy.

>You can follow this guild to swap out your optical drive with an SSD, so you have two hard drives in your computer.

Then you just install Yosemite on the SSD, and boot into that, use migration assistant to copy your stuff from the first drive. Then you use disk utility to wipe/erase the old drive and boom: you have storage and you have a fast booting SSD without that much more cost. If you can spend more than that, just get a bigger capacity SSD and maybe a new hard drive as well. Or just get 1 SSD and saw the hard drive.

I say, why have one drive when you can have two.

u/SummerGoth666 · 1 pointr/thinkpad

I used this memory: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LTBJFM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is marketed to use for replacement ram in macbooks, but works perfectly fine in both windows 7 64bit and Mint. Both of those are from personal experience.

u/asblue46 · 1 pointr/mac

So I got this. Replaced it, my mac was flying but then after a week, it wouldn't turn on anymore :( please help!

u/jizztanbul · 1 pointr/applehelp

ok, awesome. I will definitely look into that one. thanks. and yeah, I planned on ordering this if I don't get steered in any other direction. any suggestions?

u/harris0n11 · 1 pointr/buildapc

I think it does here is what my comp says

Also, I just copy and pasted that part in google and this came up on amazon. which is cheapa

EDIT: oh, you mean physically open it up.

u/giubaloo · 1 pointr/apple

This is what you need.

I have the exact same computer as you and just purchased this a month ago. Took 5 minutes to swap out. I'm 99% 8gb is the max amount of RAM the mid 2010 model can support.

u/ThePlaidJaraffe · 1 pointr/applehelp

My bad. 'Slow' computers are usually related to a few things.

  1. Hardware failures, mainly referring to failing hard drives or hard drive cables.
  2. Software issues, usually involving putting too new an operating system on an older machine can cause it to run slowly.
  3. Not enough RAM, as apps update with new technologies and such they require more RAM in order function. More RAM means you can run more programs at once (to a certain extent)

Since you dont know how to upgrade it already, I'm assuming your machine came standard with either 2gb or 4gb of RAM. Let's assume 4gb for a 2009 model. The link below should be correct based off the information you gave me. And below that is a video on how to install it. Best of luck!

Would you say that this kit is more likely to work, then?

u/BarefootBonanza · 1 pointr/applehelp

I think the mid-2010 was one of the last models that it was possible to replace the insides. Price is currently about $182

Crucial has a good compatibility page that shows what works in that year computer but only for their products. Its nice to compare what you will be getting and what definitely works just to make sure. But, I've had no problems with any of the things above

  • Get the new battery from an Apple store or third party service provider or find a genuine one on sale somewhere (I wouldn't trust third party batteries)
  • The RAM you will need for your model is here. Your computer does support 16GB, but the sticks seem kind of hard to come by.
  • I recommend getting an SSD and maybe a secondary hard drive to replace your optical drive. (Use a hard drive caddy like this)
  • Your GPU and processor are a part of your logic board (Not easily upgradable)
