The motor as well as the plastic piece that the spinning mechanism attached to. It's that plastic piece that attaches to the platter. Unfortunately, every ice cream maker seems to use different pieces, so just need to figure out how to use it. I had found a cuisinart ice-20 at goodwill for $4.ice cream maker

I'm not sure I can give an authoritative response. I've just been using my Cuisinart ICE-20 for years and don't have experience with other brands to compare it to.

I am fairly happy with it, although, as I think I said elsewhere in this thread, it doesn't scrape down the sides of the bucket too well, so I have to stop the churn and manually do it to make the ice cream churn up correctly.

I think you'd have to upgrade from plastic to fully metal to solve that problem, but you're not going to see that outside the $200 machines.

If you're going to stick to the ~$50 range, check out how large a freezer your gift-recipient has and how full it usually is. They'll have to fit the churn bucket in there and they may not be able to manage a big 2-quart capacity one that otherwise would be a good choice.

For $50 you can get one of these and make it way easier on yourself. I have one and it works great. I also recommend the Ben and Jerry's recipe book. Best blueberry ice cream I've ever had.
