If you're getting into trout fishing, the best advice I can offer is to be patient and give yourself time. When I was learning to fly fishing, I went fishing thirteen times before I caught a trout. (Of course, I grew up in southeastern New Hampshire, which is pretty lousy fishing to begin with.)
Two great resources for beginners are Sheridan Anderson's comic book Curtis Creek Manifesto and Tom's awesome Orvis Fly Fishing Learning Center, which offers both text and video instruction.

Try asking a flyshop near that river what to throw. They'll know whats working so you can stop asking yourself if the flies are correct. They'll be able to answer a lot of things.

For getting up to speed very quickly on trout fishing, it's tough to beat The Curtis Creek Manifesto, a 48-page book with easy-to-understand comic-book-style illustrations. It contains about 80% of what you need to know to become an excellent angler.

Why, /r/flyfishing of course! You're lucky to have access to fresh and salt water fish! I'm in the PNW, so I like to stay specific to my region in regards to research, etc. I mostly just keep an eye on the river/fishing report to find out what they're eating, etc. Just practice your aim when casting, keep your arm in one piece...don't move your wrist. Feel the rod load up on your back cast before casting back out, just hesitate. Mainly just have fun and dont get discouraged!
