You are correct to be paranoid, but thats just a natural reaction. Increase your security, and the paranoia should subside.
Some ways to beef up your urban living security situation
DLink makes an IFTTT motion sensor for $30
I don't think it's possible. However, it might be worth asking Abode if they can "enable" some sort of hidden feature that would allow you to do this (e.g. Home 1 vs Home 2 mode). It's worth a shot. I remember they were talking about a new automation engine a while back, so I'm hoping their will be more features in the future.
The next best thing I can think of is to get a third party motion sensor like the D-Link Motion Sensor and plug it into an Abode compatible Plug like this or this. Then you'd have to set up an Abode automation to turn on and off the outlet based on a schedule, then use IFTTT to create an Applet that says IF D-LINK Motion Sensor detects motion, THEN start the Abode Alarm.
Another option, unattractive as it may seem, is to place the motion cameras right nest to the window, on the ceiling above the window, or literally in the window frame (if you don't have that many windows).

There are several motion sensors, most use a hub but I think this one doesn't https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00KZHP102/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498089420&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=d-link+motion+sensor&dpPl=1&dpID=41SUYJNvQ0L&ref=plSrch#featureBulletsAndDetailBullets_secondary_view_div_1498089438610
It was pretty easy. I have the D-Link motion sensor and the TP-Link Smart Bulbs.
On your phone/tablet, install the Kaza app for TP-Link and the mydlink Home app. I forget this step but basically add your devices to their apps and allow 3rd party usage. I wanna say I linked everything (including IFTTT) though my Google login.
Then, in IFTTT you search for "link" to find the dlink motion sensor and add that for motion detected. For the "that" look for tp-link and add their smart bulb and do a state change or whatever you want.
After that, configure how you like. Within the mydlink app I personally have it so the sensor turns on after 8 pm so that it only triggers the lights at night.
Been running the setup since December and the trigger time seems to be about 5 seconds or less consistently.
Maybe an ifttt to turn on a bedroom light when motion is detected. (Requires a $35 D-Link Motion Sensor, not sure if it'd work with the $40 Phillips Hue Motion Sensor.)
