TP-Link has a very nice hardware for the price, and a lot of it's models run really nice with DD-WRT. For my case use, the TL-WR1043ND is unbeatable.

As for the OP's question, if you want to get signal upstairs from the basement, maybe your best choice would be a Powerline Ethernet bridge to an Access Point located upstairs. Something like this and a cheap Access Point/Router like this should do the trick.

dual band and AC are what you're probably looking as the key features. The rest is depend on your router, distance, obstruction, and air traffic.

USB adapter are very reliable especially the USB 3.0 ones. PCIe is fine too if you have space in your case.

If you want better performance then wireless, you can try Powerline Ethernet solution too.

You can have a wired connection with running any new wires.

Looked at your other posts, the guy BK1127 from the other thread has the right idea, you need to use a Powerline kit to get off of your Wifi connection.

Just plug both sides directly into the outlet (not on a powerstrip/surge protector).

I would give a Powerline Adapter a try before going wireless.

Yup, USB NICs are notorious for being finicky, even the best pale in comparison to a similarly priced PCI-E NIC. Also, if you share a circuit with the other room powerline adapters are a decent option.

This power line ethernet adapter has good speeds and is fairly cheap.

Maybe you could convince them to buy something like this. I wouldn't recommend trying to convince them to buy it for just you, but you might be able to swing it by arguing for a setup of a switch and running shorter ethernet cables (that can be hidden easier) from a different part of the house for multiple people.

you can try 'wireless to wireless' (Mesh) networking, but that cuts your throughput (speed) in half with each 'hop'. this is the 'worse case scenario' situation - this is only used if nothing else is available.

ideally, you'd run a dedicated ethernet cable to each wireless access point. if that is not possible, you can use Powerline adapters - they transmit your network signal over your electrical wiring, which is very convenient (they cannot be plugged into any power strip or surge suppressor).

you can get a wireless adapter for your laptop to leverage the 5GHz (faster) signal.

even with the above mentioned items in my original response, plus this adapter, you're just above $300. adding another WAP would push it near $400, but you'd have a great setup that would cover your entire home (and it'd cost less than the Google setup).

This one is rated at 1gbps. However I'm pretty sure performance is dependent on how your house electrical wires are setup and can vary between homes.

The network plug is on the same circuit as my entertainment unit. All is working flawlessly. Haven't ran speed test yet but I am able to stream 1080p over PLEX with no issues.

Is there a reason you can not use a powerline adapter?

I used a d-link powerline adapter with huge success even across three floors.

There are some youtube videos about this that probably embellish the option a little bit.

I didn't even read the manual--because my wife threw it away--and I had no trouble.

I have this one, but and kit sold by a big manufacturer should be good. They come in a lot of different bandwidth ratings, so make sure the one you buy is rated for the connection speed you need.

I've noticed a general improvement overall on my game compared to wifi. When I check my download speed it says I'm getting around 35mb/s. When I check my internet though the wifi in my house I get closer to 12mb/s

But ya I do get highish ping (over 200 which I would say is poor but I know some people will call that unplayable).
