Luckily for you, DanganRonpa is a very basic series to get in to. Mainly, at least. I'm gonna go ahead and run through it here, in case you or anyone else wants to save this to reference in the future so you don't have to google questions.

DanganRonpa is primarily a visual novel murder mystery video game series. In them, you will play as school aged characters, make relationships, then watch all of your favorite characters die and be forced to figure out which of your other friends killed them. I won't say any more about the plot, but it's somewhat Saw-esque, in that people are trapped, yadda yadda. No torture porn, though. For the most part, at least.

The first title, and the one you would play first, is DanganRonpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. This is available for PS Vita as a physical release or digital download, but it was also ported to PS4 on the Danganronpa 1.2 Reload disc. Either works.

The next game in the series is DanganRonpa 2: Goodbye Despair. This is, if you ask me, a substantially better game than the first, and can again be bought for PS Vita physically or digitally, and was released with DR1 on the 1.2 Reload Disc I mentioned earlier. The PS4 version is pretty much the first two games bundled and released on PS4, since the series had been handheld only until then.

Also, if you're interested, Danganronpa 1 & 2 were originally Japan-only PSP games, and the Vita versions are actually enhanced ports. But we never got the originals. I digress.

Next up would be DanganRonpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, which I honestly can't recommend. Instead of being a visual novel, it's an odd third person shooter, and it's not a murder mystery or anything. The plot also ended up not being important. I would say just read a plot summary when you get to this point (not early, it'll spoil the first two games), and move on, but if you want this can be bought for Vita (the original release) or PS4 (a recent port).

Next up is DanganRonpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy. This is an odd one since it's actually an anime. They wanted to wrap up the story arc they had going, but they didn't want to be tied down by making it an interactive game, so they made it an anime. You can easily find it all online, the only hard part is finding the order to watch it. The show was split up into two arcs, "Future", and "Despair", with the final episode being the only episode in the "Hope" arc. If you get to this point, here is an episode guide (be extremely cautious about scrolling on that page, as you might have it spoiled for you; I think that same page has a plot synopsis). Watch it in the order listed there and no other order. The anime was overall good, but it definitely had it's flaws.

Finally, we get to the upcoming release: DanganRonpa V3: Killing Harmony. It has a confusing name, I know. I think they should've just called it V4, since even though it's only the third main game, having two entries with a "3" in it is confusing. Either way, this will be another game like DanganRonpa 1 and 2, with an entirely new cast of characters and a brand new overarching plot (since the anime of DanganRonpa 3 finished the plot regarding the previous characters). It will be released on Vita and PS4 on 9/26. However, it's been out in Japan since 1/12 so many spoilers are present online; be careful!

And that's it! In the end, be extremely careful about looking up anything about the series, as knowing who lives or dies could ruin a lot of the fun of playing them. There's also a couple smaller short novels and misc. Media, but I don't think they're necessary and I don't even know much about them myself despite being a huge fan. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

On a side note, if you're interested I can also do a rundown of the Persona games and their releases if you want, as some of them have been released multiple times with different features. Just ask if you want me to! I know it was frustrating for me when I had to do a bunch of google searches to find all the information the first time.

EDIT: Oh my god I can't believe I completely forgot the steam releases! Along with the PS4 (which I did mention), DanganRonpa 1, 2, and Another Episode have all been ported to steam this year, so they are also available to play on PC if you prefer doing so.

No one's suggested Danganronpa, re: games? Gotta fix that.

As a female vita owner who also likes J-games, I'm going to recommend Danganronpa. If you think your wife would like a game about teenagers trapped in a school and forced to kill each other, where one of the main characters is an animatronic wise-cracking bear. And if she doesn't already have it.

...only if she likes to read, though, since it's a visual novel (with mini-games and wandering around the school, but still a ton of reading).

If she likes that, there are two other Danganronpa games + a future game on the horizon.

If she ends up liking visual novels, there's also the Steins;Gate visual novel and Virtue's Last Reward (which I haven't yet played myself but have been assured is fantastic).

I also totally second P4G. And Project Diva, if she likes rhythm games. And maybe Hatoful Boyfriend, if you think she'd like dating pigeons.

There are also a bunch of classic PS1 JRPGs available for the vita via the PSN store for super-cheap, like Final Fantasy and Suikoden.

Can't help too much with accessories, except to say that you should definitely get her a big memory card if you can, and that the P4G Dancing All Night Collector's Edition includes a neat pouch and vita skin. Depends on whether she's into P4G, though.

Edit: quick grammar fix

You might as well wait for a sale. I mean, it's a really good visual novel game. Probably the best VN I've played on the Vita (along with its sequel).

But because it goes on sale every so often, you may as well just wait for a sale.

Also, FYI, Amazon currently has the retail version on sale for $29

It actually is getting an English release (the PS Vita remake) next february. You can preorder it on Amazon.

The Danganronpa series is pretty highly regarded.

Tearaway is also a good choice. Really utilizes the Vita capabilities well.

Doubtful. The only copies on Amazon are through a third party seller right now. They're more expensive than its normal retail price: http://smile.amazon.com/DanganRonpa-Trigger-Happy-Havoc-PlayStation-Vita/dp/B00DVPMVIU?sa-no-redirect=1

They don't seem to stock Danganropa. It was on my watchlist along with FFX-HD. I'm sure I could have figured out a 3rd game to go along with it.

> Most of the VN's aren't available there. Availability is a little fuzzy when it comes to these things. I don't know where else they're even distributed.

He did mention Amazon. You'd have to buy the Japanese version and then apply a translation patch afterwards. A bit of Googling turns up a few other shopping sites as well.

I'm playing this weird little game... http://www.amazon.com/DanganRonpa-Trigger-Happy-Havoc-PlayStation-Vita/dp/B00DVPMVIU
It's very dark. Plus daily Spelunky.

Persona 4 Golden has some added Social Links, some new features like a vegetable garden (basically letting you grow items that you can't usually purchase), some additional characters and story events for said characters, additional Personas, new explorable areas of the overworld, a bonus dungeon, new music, costumes that you can wear to affect a character's appearance only, more playable days if you're on track for the true ending, various QoL adjustments to the battle system, and a special epilogue.

It sounds like a lot, and it kinda is, but don't let it put you off P4 Vanilla if Golden represents a bigger financial investment for you. The vast majority of the game is mostly the same. If you're really looking to play Golden and don't have a Vita, I recommend the PS TV, which has near-complete Vita functionality for only $40 (and the Vita has plenty of good games, mind you. May I also recommend Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc?). Golden is also only about $20.
