The biggest runs are Miller, Bendis/Brubaker and Waid. I've listed all four runs in both their Deluxe/Omnibus formats and their standard paperback versions. I imagine they're all available digitally, as well.

Frank Miller (1980-1982, 1986)

IS THIS A GAME TO YOU?!

  • The Dark Knight draws heavily from The Long Halloween and plenty of the Joker's lines are taken straight out of a prose issue collected here. There's also the obvious influence of The Killing Joke and The Man Who Laughs. The Killing Joke was also the primary influence on Tim Burton's Batman.

  • Batman Begins draws from a number of stories include Year One, Blind Justice and The Man Who Falls which is collected here.

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier was based on the fairly recent Ed Brubaker run which is phenomenal.

  • The Dark Knight Rises combines elements of Knightfall, No Man's Land and The Dark Knight Returns. The Dark Knight Returns is also a major influence on the upcoming Batman V Superman.

  • The Avengers mainly draws from the original first issue of The Avengers, which is collected here and retold again here in a modern setting, as well as The Ultimates. There are plenty of shots that feel like they were lifted right out of The Ultimates. On a side note, Joss also wrote the introduction to the book years ago and it was through doing this that he figured out exactly why the Avengers work.

  • The X-Men movies tend to draw more from the 80's, especially Chris Claremont's run. X-Men 2 draws heavily from Gods Loves, Man Kills. X-Men 3 is loosely based off of The Dark Phoenix Saga as well as Joss Whedon's relatively recent Astonishing X-Men. The Wolverine draws from Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's [Wolverine mini-series] and Days of Future Past is based on, you guessed it, Day of Future Past. Even though X-Men: First Class takes it's name from the comic of the same name it has more in common with the early Stan Lee stuff. X-Men Origins: Wolverine draws from several comics include Wolverine's Origin mini-series and Weapon X. The first X-Men movie isn't really based off any particular arc although it did heavily influence Ultimate X-Men.

  • The upcoming Daredevil TV series seems to be drawing heavily from Frank Miller's run, particularly his origin story The Man Without Fear. While Miller's main run took place in the late 70's/early 80's The Man Without Fear came out in the 90's.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy takes its line-up from the 2004 series but the plot of the movie is all its own.

  • Avenger: Age of Ultron seems to be an original story that's taking it's cues, at least in part, from Ultron Unlimited which is collected here.

  • Man of Steel was heavily influenced by John Byrne's 80's reboot although its structure is heavily modelled on the 2010 graphic novel Earth One. There are also bits and pieces taken from Birthright, Secret Origin and All-Star Superman.

  • Iron Man 3 certainly takes its cues from Extremis but a lot of it is just pure Shane Black. The first Iron Man isn't based on a particular storyline but Tony's origin stuff in Afghanistan is almost identical to the flashbacks in Extremis that revamp Tony's origin for a modern context. Iron Man 2 borrows a little from Demon in a Bottle and Armor Wars but ultimately does its own thing.

  • The writer of the Fantastical Four reboot has mentioned that they've been influenced by Ultimate Fantastic Four.

  • Ant-Man follows an original story but is primarily influenced by the Scott Lang Ant-Man books from the late 70's/early 80's.

  • The Thor movies aren't based on any particular storyline but they are vaguely influenced by Walter Simon's run as well as J. Michael Straczynski's run

  • Green Lantern draws heavily from Geoff John's run, especially his near-perfect origin story Secret Origin

  • AKA Jessica Jones is based on the incredible Alias.

Do you want to read digital or physical copies of comics?

I can give you some recommendations for Daredevil if you want, but I've never read digital comics before, so I'll just show you physical copies.

You can start with Frank Miller's run, which has three volumes and another story later (Born Again). The trade (trade paperback, it's a collection of issues bound into a paperback book) you read, "The Man Without Fear" is Frank Miller's re-imagining of Daredevil's origin.

Volume 1

Volume 2

Volume 3

Born Again

After Frank Miller's run you can read Bendis' run. It is also in three volumes.

Volume 1

Volume 2

Volume 3

Then Brubaker's run, again, three volumes.

Volume 1

Volume 2

Volume 3

And then Waid's run. You can collect this in two different ways, a bunch of smaller trades, or five larger hardcover copies. I'd recommend the hardcovers, they're easier to read and I'm too lazy to link all of the trades.

Volume 1

Volume 2

Volume 3

Volume 4

Volume 5

And now you're all caught up to the current run. There was some stuff in between these other runs, like "Yellow" and Kevin Smith's run, but this is the main stuff. I'm guessing the five issues you picked up last week are from this run, so all you need to do is tell the comicbook shop guy you want to add Daredevil to your "pull list". This means every time a new Daredevil issue comes out (once a month) the shop will put it aside so you can pick it up whenever you want.

If you want to read digital comics, that's something different though.

u/TheDownvoteDefender · 6 pointsr/comicbooks

Honestly, I would just recommend starting with issue number one of the current run by Mark Waid. It's a great jumping on point and doesn't really require too much prior knowledge about the character.

If you're looking for more of a short and sweet origin story to get you started I would go with Frank Miller and JRJR's Daredevil: The Man Without Fear. It's a classic, and pretty easy volume to read.

And if none of those strike your fancy I'd say to check out the FAQ for some other great suggestions.

u/centipededamascus · 5 pointsr/comicbooks

Daredevil: The Man Without Fear is his origin story.

Daredevil by Mark Waid is the current ongoing series that's really easy to start with.

u/drmcst · 5 pointsr/graphicnovels

If you ever feel like getting into the superhero side of things, another great series is Frank Miller's Daredevil run. It's collected in Omnibus format as well as three less pricey paperbacks, along with Man Without Fear and Born Again. His run is darker than your typical capes story, so it should be right up your alley.

u/AlTheOneAndOnly · 3 pointsr/Defenders

Now if you crave more of the Man without Fear, I can provide a bit more on the subject (which is my area of expertise).

Daredevil has two definitive origin retellings, The Man Without Fear (which is what DDs1 is based on) by Frank Miller & John Romita, Jr., and Daredevil: Yellow by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (the same creative team behind Batman: The Long Halloween).
TMWF: http://www.amazon.com/Daredevil-Without-Fear-Frank-Miller/dp/0785134794/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1452067420&sr=1-1&keywords=the+man+without+fear
DDY: http://www.amazon.com/DAREDEVIL-YELLOW-Jeph-Loeb/dp/0785109692/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1452067605&sr=1-1&keywords=daredevil+yellow

Now both of those stories are excellent, but for Daredevil: Yellow I'd actually recommend reading Kevin Smith & Joe Quesada's controversial Guardian Devil before you start it. If you do read it, please, PLEASE read it the whole way through, as most just stop before the end which is criminal. I guarantee that if you finish, you will have a whole new respect for a certain foe of Spider-Man. (Also definitely buy the trade, the individual covers give away things that happened in the previous issue so if you buy in bulk like I do you will be spoiled)
DDGD: http://www.amazon.com/Daredevil-Guardian-Devil-Kevin-Smith/dp/078514143X/ref=pd_sim_14_4?ie=UTF8&dpID=51BmRRUZ5oL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR104%2C160_&refRID=18YSDWRHE8YQ2CWRR0N4

Now I'd also recommend reading Brian Michael Bendis & Alex Maleev's run, as well as Ed Brubaker & Michael Lark's run which comes right after it, as both are some of the best comics of the Modern Age.
DDbBMB&AMv1: http://www.amazon.com/Daredevil-Michael-Bendis-Ultimate-Collection/dp/0785143882/ref=pd_sim_14_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=51Ssk-ZLobL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR103%2C160_&refRID=1AAEZR1ZFM4AKWTPR57W
DDbEB&MLv1: http://www.amazon.com/Daredevil-Brubaker-Michael-Ultimate-Collection/dp/0785163344/ref=pd_sim_14_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=51gw0%2BVbCkL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR104%2C160_&refRID=0AEEM22Y7D77C00BFNX8

Now for the big stuff, The Bullseye/Elektra Saga by Frank Miller & Klaus Janson which I recommended above, and of course, Daredevil: Born Again by Frank Miller & David Mazzucchelli, which is considered one of the greatest comic books ever written, and I would agree. If you only read one thing, read that. It (along with The Man Without Fear) is being released with all of Frank Miller's other works on the character as a companion piece to the omnibus I recommended above, so you may want to look into that.

I hope that is enough Daredevil to tide you over until March.

u/Downey17 · 2 pointsr/comicbooks
  • Well, there's always Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli, one of the more popular Batman stories.

  • For Daredevil, there are a couple of different stories you could read. There's Daredevil: Yellow, part of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's colour series (I think Hulk: Gray is an origin story too, but I know that Spider-Man: Blue is not), and there's also Frank Miller and JRJR's The Man Without Fear. There's also Battlin' Jack Murdock, but that's not really about Daredevil so much as it's about his father, but it's an enjoyable read. I'm not sure how well these 3 stories fit together, with regards to contradicting each other, though.

  • For Wolverine, there's Wolverine: Origin, which reveals his childhood and the first manifestation of his powers (Not to be confused with Wolverine: Origins, which was either a story arc or its own series, I'm not sure). Then there's Wolverine: Weapon X, by Barry Windsor-Smith, which is the story of him getting his claws. And again, not to be confused with a different Wolverine: Weapon X, which was an ongoing series.

  • I think Superman: Birthright is the big Superman origin book, but I'm not completely sure, not a big supes fan.

Edit: Added some links to clarify, just 'cause I'm such a chill guy. Also, there are some other DC Year One books, definitely Green Arrow and Batgirl, probably some more.
u/that_name_is_taken · 2 pointsr/comicbooks

The only way to erase the Ben Affleck Daredevil from people's mind is for Slade to review and capture the feel of Frank Miller's work. Perhaps just read Daredevil:The Man Without Fear by Miller/Romita Jr or Daredevil:Yellow by Loeb/Sale, then hire a better actor who acts like he's really blind like Rutger Hauer on Blind Fury or like Zatoichi, the blind swordsman, have his costume look more like the comic book (sleek, light, no fancy dangles), then have him move like world-class gymnast instead of a guy clumsily running around in spandex.

Ghost Rider: Wait for reprints! Do not jump into the 2000s series without back issues or you will be confused!

Those are the best jumping on points for each series. Again, i say to avoid Ghost Rider since he has a complicated mythos

As for DC... stick to Vertigo stuff since a lot of DC's best jumping on points are out of print of DC don't care to reprint them. They care a lot about Batman (in which case, start with Year One by Frank Miller) and a lot of the Vertigo stuff but a lot of starting points like Mark Waid's Flash, Mike Grell's Green Arrow and George Perez's Wonder Woman are just now being collected and the Green Lantern hardcovers have gotten incredibly expensive. If you want to read DC, stick to iZombie, Transmetropolitan, Sandman, V for Vendetta, Invisibles, Watchmen and Preacher. Those are the DC series that their corporate branch really wants to keep in print.

Some great indie stuff is 8-Bit Theater, Artesia, Spawn, Questionable Content, Black Hole, Maus, Love and Rockets, Black Kiss, Sin City, Promethia, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The Boys, The Walking Dead, Witchblade, A Contract With God, Lazarus and Saga.

Start with Daredevil The Man Without Fear by Frank Miller and John Romita Jr. It’s pretty much his definitive origin, and what Season 1 of Netflix Daredevil was really inspired by. https://www.amazon.com/Daredevil-Without-Fear-Frank-Miller/dp/0785134794

Then you can pick up Daredevil Vol. 1 by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson which is the start of their run and continue on the next volumes 2 and 3 https://www.amazon.com/DAREDEVIL-FRANK-MILLER-KLAUS-JANSON/dp/0785134735

Daredevil Born Again by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli which is the most famous of the Daredevil stories and what Season 3 of Netflix Daredevil was heavily inspired by https://www.amazon.com/Daredevil-Born-Again-Frank-Miller/dp/0785134816

Then if you want a kind of sequel to Born Again, pick up Daredevil Guardian Devil by Kevin Smith and Joe Quesada. Season 3 of Netflix Daredevil also takes a lot from this story https://www.amazon.com/Daredevil-Guardian-Devil-Kevin-Smith/dp/078514143X

Mark Waid’s run is a lot more modern and not nearly as dark or gritty, it’s more adventurous and swashbuckling compared to the darker grittier Frank Miller stuff, but it is good as well!

u/white_and_qwerty · 1 pointr/graphicnovels

For more Image stuff, I'd recommend:

Invincible - This comic is so absurdly good. I've read up to volume four of the ultimate collections and had a blast the whole way through (it's probably in my top 3 comics I've ever read, if not #1). The characters are wonderful, and everything that happens has an impact on the story as a whole. Not to mention the fantastic art!

Monstress - This comic is just gorgeous. (Seriously. Here's a sample.) The story's pretty good, too! It's kind of a horror adventure comic, if that makes any sense. Or, a fantasy adventure adventure comic with darker themes. Yeah, let's go with that. Point is, it's good, and it deserves your attention.

Now for my superhero recommendations:

Daredevil by Frank Miller - If you want a more action-oriented Daredevil story, definitely read through some of Frank Miller's stuff. You can jump right into his run with the omnibus or paperback collections or you can get your feet wet first with his standalone stories, such as the retelling of Daredevil's origin in The Man Without Fear or what many consider to be the best DD tale ever told, Born Again (both of which are contained in the omnibus companion if you wanna stick to the nice hardcover stuff).

Batman: Year One - Speaking of Frank Miller, I've noticed a severe lack of this book on your shelf. This is Batman's origin as it was meant to be told, and is still my favorite Batman story to date. There's not much else to say other than if you consider yourself a Batfan, you need to read Year One.

Batman: The Long Halloween (and its sequel, Dark Victory) - Since you enjoyed (most of) Yellow, Blue & Gray and like Batman, why not follow the Loeb/Sale team and read two of the best stories set early in the caped crusader's career?

Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender - Wanna see Wolverine, Deadpool and friends tear shit up? This is the book for you!

Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. - Wanna see a ragtag group of "heroes" you've likely never heard of tear shit up even harder? This is definitely the book for you. Nextwave is the comic equivalent of dumb popcorn fun.
