I got this one and there is no mess whatsoever. Between Chaffles I wipe the surface with a paper towel but that's all there is to it. Highly recommend.

It's good for making actual waffle style chaffles - I use it for sweet ones that I'm going to eat with a fork with sf syrup and stuff. It's not as good for making chaffles to basically use as sandwich bread or burger buns. The mini is just a better size for that and seems to make them crispier.
That said, I'm fairly new at this myself, so I could be doing something wrong or just not letting them cook long enough in the larger waffle maker.
