The better ones are ~$50 and display more info... but that is pretty much the cheapest and will let you see the codes out of your engine that caused the light to come on.

What year is the EFF living in? The ability to read and reset fault codes by third party equipment has been the case for many a year or at least it has in the UK. Garages have had the equipment for at least a decade and as a consumer I can buy a fault code reader that'll work on pretty much any car made in the last 14 years for £11.65 on Amazon.
