A cheap solution:

Buy six Command hooks - the sturdier variety. Buy a thicker dowel rod and either sand or paint it to make it smooth. Buy tab top black out panel.

Use a level and put three hooks on either side of the door close together but you want to put 1 up - 1 down - 1 up. You'll probably have to finagle putting on the curtain with threading it on the hooks. (The 2 up 1 down hook assembly should help keep your dowel in place as you move the curtain).

It would actually be easier if you used two panels (or take 1 longer panel and split it - a cheaper option).

Another solution would be buying foam core (comes in 4x8ft panels about $15), cutting it to size and just sliding it back and forth. If you want fancy it up - get a cheap twin size duvet cover & use as envelope for the foam.

GET. BLACKOUT. CURTAINS.

Don't delay. The second you have money get those damn things. If you have to skip a meal to afford them. Do it. I spent the first two weeks of my job without them and was miserable. I would go to bed late and wake up throughout the day non damn stop. The first day I hung them up and slept, I felt so refreshed. They are worth every penny. Get these and a rod to hang them up. Then tape them to the sides so no light can slip through. After that get yourself an alarm to wake you up. Your eyes rely on light to fully wake you. So either get a smart lightbulb that turns on when you wake up or get a lamp that you can turn on easily.

You get off at 6 which is perfect. Go to sleep right when you get home and shoot to wake up at 4 pm. This gives you ample time to run errands and be there for your partner of they work day shift. On your off days you don't have to follow your sleep schedule strictly but find hobbies you can do that won't wake everyone up while also keeping you awake for a good bit of the night.

The biggest hurdle for you is going to be morning activities. Early appointments or social gatherings will be rough. But take power naps when you can and invest in energy drinks or coffee if you are going to be up for a while.

Night shift is great but you need to make adjustments. When it comes to the dating scene, he open and honest about your work schedule. Depending on your area, you might not have to worry too much but that all depends.

Last but not least, if you start a family get off night shift. This shift is not designed for families. I have seen and heard stories about guys on this shift destroying their marriage/getting distant with their kids because they were too stubborn to admit this shift isn't designed for the family man. If you are worried about a paycut talk with your supervisor. At my work you just lose your shift premium but can still keep your seniority. It could be different. But docking your pay to keep your family is worth it in my opinion.
