Depending on the size of the roots and/or how far away from the trunk the roots are, please be aware that there will be accompanying branch death on the tree that the roots fed, u/MSSocialMedia , if this is the solution you choose. Copper sulfate is a caustic chemical, and should not be used around drinkable water lines. The copper sulfate that comes into contact with the surrounding landscape can also kill grass, plants and other trees. I would suggest a root barrier, like this, which will have less impact on both your tree and your household water.
