In The Golden Bough, the author makes a strong case for the importance of the Need-Fire and even argues that 'purification' may have been done by fire by many early Europeans. Some of these 'superstitious practices' were carried forward until the last century or so in some remote places in Europe.
FWIW, My tribe uses fire at the outset of the ritual to set the sacred space apart.
