This is Blizzard we're talking about. The Diablo Battlechest is still $20-$30.

Not anymore it doesn't:

>Includes games Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction expansion and strategy guides for both games. Diablo II - Diablo, the Lord of Terror, has fallen to a brave hero beneath the church of Tristram. Now that hero is gone, replaced by a Dark Wanderer who roams the world of Sanctuary leaving death and destruction in his wake. As a hero of humanity, you must face the minions of Diablo’s evil brothers and stop the Dark Wanderer before he fulfills his terrible destiny. Diablo II Lord of Destruction - The expansion to Diablo II adds a host of new features to the game, including two new playable classes -- the shapeshifting Druid and the cunning Assassin. Explore the snowy homeland of the Barbarians, face fiendish new monsters, and arm yourself with thousands of new weapons, armor, and magical items in the fight against the last of the Prime Evils

Idk for sure about the Gold version but I can verify that both pirated versions and what you get from the "Battle Chest" work on 8.1

Amazon has the battlechest for $30, but note that this is the 'new version' that does NOT come with the original Diablo. Link Sadly, I've not seen any for $20.

Some of my favorites...

  • The Baldur's Gate series by BioWare and its spin-offs built on the same engine. You can get them all in a $20 DVD-ROM here. An early precursor to Dragon Age.

  • Neverwinter Nights is the next step from Baldur's Gate, before Dragon Age. Amazon has a cheap box set with all sequels and expansions.

  • Fallout 1,2 and Tactics... they're not FPS like Fallout 3 but rather top-down RPGs like Baldur's Gate. Again, Amazon has a cheap box set (just make sure you don't buy the censored European version).

  • Diablo II and its expansion. Get the Diablo Battle Chest to play it along with Diablo 1. The upcoming Diablo III plays a lot like the originals, so D2 will get you prepped. TorchLight is also a similar game, developed by some ex-Blizzard people I blieve.

  • Of course there's Warcraft (not the MMO World of Warcraft) and StarCraft to get you into real-time strategy games. There are Battle Chests (box sets with expansions) for WarCraft III and Starcraft 1. StarCraft II is also out but it's not complete yet. (A Battle Chest for Warcrafts 1 and 2 also exists but it's out of print and expensive now.)

  • All Most of the Sim games (SimCity, its sequels and its sister games like SimTower). Avoid most of the post-EA Sim games like The Sims, SimCity Societies and Spore. There are good non-Maxis, SimCity-inspired games like Cities XL and Tropico. Worth checking out sincee the "real" Sim series has gone to shit lately.

  • If you want to get into MMORPGs, World of Warcraft (WoW) is the king for a reason. You can play it, and its copycat Rift, for free up until level 20. Star Wars: The Old Republic is a SW-themed WoW copycat, that plays nothing like the original BioWare Knights of the Old Republic games. Guild Wars is also a favorite... developed by ex-Blizzard peeps, you buy the game retail but don't pay a monthly fee. There's a number of other free-to-play MMOs out there, but they're mostly crap. Also, some pay MMOs are crap, too.

  • Many western RPGs developed for PS3 and 360 play better on the PC (meaning, with higher graphic capabilities and a mod community), including: Dragon Age Origins and 2, Mass Effect series, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim. There's also PC ports of Fable and Jade Empire. You can usually connect a USB Xbox 360 controller if you want gamepad controls.

Good Old Games and Steam are good resources for finding PC classics on the cheap as well as being patched to work on modern PCs (Windows 7 64-bit).

Blizzard is notorious for this. Their games will occasionally be 50% off, but anything akin to Steam Sale prices are unheard of.

Warcraft 3 $20 (2002)

Diablo 2 $15 (2000)

Starcraft $19 (1998)

LoD made huge improvements in the game like Runewords and other features. Although, as a 15 year old game, I'm sure both are on sale cheap somewhere. I see Amazon has both on sale for 13.60 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002BQN7Q/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687502&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00005A3I8&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0D50RFTS9H45GJQTM3H9

I imagine you might even be able to find the battlechest cheaper at a place like G2A or other reseller.

I don't have an extra but this: http://www.amazon.com/Diablo-Battlechest-new-version-PC-Mac/dp/B0002BQN7Q

It's a pretty damn good deal with free shipping.

u/flying_roomba · 2 pointsr/Diablo

I would say yes. I started with Diablo 2, had a great time, then tried Diablo 1. D1 I think is much more difficult, and more scary to me because of the dark graphics. You can still purchase Diablo 1, but I don't know how it would install on Vista or 7 (at the time I had XP). You probably would want the Diablo Battle Chest.

The battle chest is available on Amazon for $29.99.

Thirty bucks on Amazon is the best I could find in a couple minutes of checking:

More than likely the one at Walmart was just Diablo 2 Battle chest, the first ones had Diablo 1 included.

Check Target, Walmart, or Bestbuy. I see Diablo Battle Chests (D1+D2+LOD) every time I am in one of those three stores and I think they even brought the price down.

u/Immaprinnydood · 1 pointr/gaming

I don;t know about Diablo 1 you might have to order that online, but everytime I got o best buy I see the Diablo II Battlechest. I also saw it at gamestop, and walmart actually.. Here is a link to one of them on amazon. I gotta say, good choice finally starting to play it, it really is an amazing game. :)

u/415PHANTOM · 1 pointr/Diablo

Make sure you buy the new version. Amazon

u/statikuz · 1 pointr/Diablo

Yeah that's a little rough. Would be nice if the battlechest was like $20 and you could buy it digitally but that's life I guess.

You can get it from Amazon and just activate your CD keys with your Battle.net account, that'll let you download it digitally in the future.

Ehh, I'd rather pay $30 dollars than risk my account getting perm ban.

Now that it's been a few days, http://www.amazon.com/Diablo-Battlechest-new-version-Mac/dp/B0002BQN7Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1317523963&sr=1-1

It's been this every time I've checked, including when I looked late last year.

u/Geekyswede · 1 pointr/Warcraft

On Amazon

The best part about Blizzard game is that they work for both PC/MAC, something i wish more devs would do.

u/nilleftw · 1 pointr/Diablo

This is the cheapest I've found.

I bought my key off some shady site for less way back when the new b.net launched. Key still works and I payed under $5 for it.
