FAVOLCANO Easycap ($11). See capture quality here.

i-o Data GV-USB2 ($35). See capture quality here.

Diamond VC500 ($36). See capture quality here.

Dazzle Video Capture ($44). See capture quality here.

Hauppauge 610 ($49). See capture quality here.

To capture from these you would need a computer, an AV splitter, and some software to capture video (like OBS).

u/godson21212 · 9 pointsr/lostmedia

Have you tried posting on the lost media wiki forums? I'm sure someone there would be willing to take them and convert them just for the off chance there might be something on them that someone is looking for. You'll be surprised, some people are looking for commercials and stuff.

Alternatively, I found this on Amazon for like, $35.

u/tylermbell · 8 pointsr/nosleep

i really want to see this video. sounds creepy as fuck. great story.

here is a article on digital capturing so you can convert this to a format of your choice

edit: maybe look into this model, i know you don't want to spend too much. about 40 bucks

you might have to pay a little money...but reddit might be able to boost the youtube video, which is pretty rewarding. i'd help spread it. very interesting stuff!

You can't just "convert" a composite video feed to firewire with a simple cable. Firewire is a complex digital data format.

What model camera do you have? If you have firewire input and output, getting a firewire cable would be optimal.

Alternately, you need a video adapter, like one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-VC500-Touch-Capture-Device/dp/B000VM60I8/ref=pd_cp_e_3

u/edinc90 · 3 pointsr/Filmmakers

FireWire is the only way to capture the digital video directly off of the tape. If you have a Thunderbolt port on your computer, a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter will work.

An RCA video capture card is taking the analog output from the camera (not the digital signal) and converting it to digital. There are capture cards that do this. They look like this.

Any cable that claims to convert from RCA to USB, or from FireWire to USB without any sort of circuitry is fake. FireWire to USB does not exist. FireWire is a completely different protocol from USB. It's like the difference between a water hose and an extension cord. Chinese manufacturers have no shame sometimes and will just splice together any type of connectors and sell them.

The Sony proprietary connector-to-USB cable is for transferring data from the memory card in the camera. USB isn't fast enough to stream live uncompressed video. That's why all the MiniDV cameras used FireWire.

TL;DR: FireWire is the only way to get the highest quality video off of your camera. An analog capture card will work, but it will result in a decrease in quality (since it's analog.)

I am going to borrow a VCR from an old person at work and transfer them to digital, or see if my parents have one stashed away somewhere.

Looking for a VCR to use with this analog capture device to save old family VHS tapes in digital form.

Found 3 VCRs in my area and was wondering which of these is the best option? How would you rank these?

u/ima420r · 2 pointsr/techsupport

I bought a cheap USB capture device that allowed me to plug my old camcorder in via A/V cords. I think it was $30. Converted all of the family tapes to digital and burn to disc for people. It is easy to do and inexpensive.

u/BigShotZero · 2 pointsr/GreenBayPackers

I used this for old family vhs and Betamax tapes. Works well and the cost is reasonable.

Any HD webcam can work, if you don't have one you can look them up online. But a better idea would be an actual game footage recorder. If you're on a console, you could buy a recorder that plugs into the cords that run to the TV and record the footage directly. Something like this might work. On PC you can use Fraps or anything that video captures the screen.

As a good host site, Youtube is probably the best.

The reviews seem more positive and people can get it to work easier. Looks like it's a repackages EasyCap with some firmware changes.

---

There's also this:
http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Camcorders-supporting-composite-connection/dp/B000VM60I8/ref=pd_cp_e_2

Which has significantly more positive reviews and supports 720x480 resolution. I'd probably read up a bit more on that and purchase it if it's good for what you need. The price is higher but the video quality will look better.

I looked up some Diamond VC500 quality tests on YouTube and they seem much better than EasyCap recordings, and most of the videos weren't even rendered properly (black bars, resampling enabled). So yeah, I'd go with the Diamond VC500 for sure.

u/throwawayblaaaarg · 2 pointsr/DIY

Is this the device you are talking about? I think that the simple, and cheaper, cables would only work from a camcorder to tv. There are a lot of ways to digitize analog media. It depends on the kind of machine you are running, OS and what your equipment budget is. A lot of older methods won't yield the highest resolution video but it would preserve your old home videos in a digital format. Let me know what your set up is and I'll help as much as I can.

u/AyrA_ch · 2 pointsr/softwaregore

My capture card works up to Windows 7 (VideoMate C200 Pro).

New ones aren't that expensive: 35 USD

u/Brianb1700 · 2 pointsr/howardstern
u/Psyqlone · 2 pointsr/techsupport

I use one of these.

...works for me.

u/WhyBeAre · 2 pointsr/letsplay

This is the cheapest thing you will find, it works ok, but I think I'd try to emulate first because it would probably look better since you can do some upscaling that will improve visuals. This is an example of it's raw output, and this is what it looks like after some cropping (and maybe color correction, I forgot if I used any). I have no proof on this, but I think this card is basically a rebranded version of this far more expensive card by Diamond. Overall though for the price I have been pleased with it.

u/k-del · 1 pointr/minimalism

I got a vhs to dvd capture device to run from my camcorder (vhs-c) to a laptop with an external hard drive. I got a pretty cheap one that's kind of quirky, but it works fine for my needs.

u/OmegaTyrant · 1 pointr/smashbros

I used this to record Melee, Brawl, and Brawl mods http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VM60I8/

It's cheap, yet produces as good quality as you can get on a Wii, and it's really simple to use, being ready for use out of the box. The only real problem I found with it is that it doesn't record in widescreen, though that's irrelevant for Melee of course.

You can see my Melee/Brawl videos on my youtube channel for examples of its quality https://www.youtube.com/user/OmegaTyrant4792

u/SamuraiStormtrooper · 1 pointr/speedrun

You could always get something similar to this. It's not too expensive, and you can find them for cheaper. It's not the best quality but it's something.

u/DulcetFox · 1 pointr/HelpMeFind

Well the good news is that it appears many libraries have a copy of it on VHS. So I would recommend that you try to get your local library to obtain a copy of the movie on loan, and then to convert the VHS to a DVD or onto a format that you can save onto your computer. If you cannot find someone who has the ability to do this, then you may need to purchase something, but you can use something like this which only costs $30.

u/elamo · 1 pointr/Surface

Does this look like it'd work?

I've been watching them on my TV using the yellow and white component cables for video/audio.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000VM60I8?cache=97b8202e4b3d5d0f479864dd1844fb3e&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&qid=1404787072&sr=1-5#ref=mp_s_a_1_5

u/buffalo442 · 1 pointr/Buffalo

Do it yourself. Get a USB capture card (e.g. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VM60I8?tag=ttr_vhs_to_dvd_converters-20&ascsubtag=[site|ttr[cat|541[art|NA[pid|49767[tid|NA[bbc|NA).

If you don't have the camcorder to play them back, see if you can borrow one from someone.

If the tapes are VHS-C, you can get an adapter to play them back in a VCR pretty cheap.

If the tapes are 8mm, those camcorders were pretty common and you can probably find someone who has one pretty easily (I have one if you need to borrow it).

u/thatJainaGirl · 1 pointr/smashbros

For lagless SD recording on a budget, I recommend either the Dazzle DVC-100 or the Diamond VC500. I have and use both, and they're pretty great.

http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-VC500-Touch-Capture-Device/dp/B000VM60I8 If you ever get another VCR player, you can use this to covert it to DVD and preserve the tape. There is probably a cheaper way to do it out there, but that's what I found after a quick search.

u/xiMbd03u1 · 1 pointr/fpvracing

Since there is very little consumer interest in a product like this, nearly all of the available products are geared towards the professional video market, and are super expensive.

The simplest way to do it as a consumer would be to feed the video into a PC and use software to stack it up. For example, this video capture interface is around $35:

http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-VC500-Touch-Capture-Device/dp/B000VM60I8/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1449258258&sr=1-2&keywords=video+capture+card

And you might be able to use something like the iSpy open source security camera software to view the feeds live.

https://www.ispyconnect.com/

The iffy part here is that I'm not 100% sure how many of those capture devices you can run at the same time, and whether they will be compatible with iSpy.

u/sin0822 · 1 pointr/hardware

Do you still have a VHS player?

There are a lot of affordable capture devices that will change analog video into a digital file and then you can put that on a DVD if you want: https://www.amazon.com/Diamond-VC500-Capture-Software-Convert/dp/B000VM60I8

If your TV has component input (or even just S-video if your VCR also outputs s-video), as some still do, you can just directly hook up the VCR to your TV.

Easy to use, I have a dazzle and an easycap, both work great. Easycap gets shitty reviews for some reason, but I have literally had 0 problems ever with it.

HD Capture cards are more expensive, you're right. These work great for fun home recording stuff with your friends tho.

u/TheChosenJuan01 · 1 pointr/SSBPM

How do you think something like this would be for someone on a tight budget? Not looking for anything too fancy.

u/JumboChimp · 1 pointr/Cameras

Somewhere on the camera should be two RCA connectors, one yellow, one white. They may be hidden behind a little door or flap. You'll need RCA cables and an analog to digital converter that plugs into a USB port, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Diamond-VC500-Touch-Capture-Device/dp/B000VM60I8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1491142797&sr=8-4&keywords=analog+digital+video+converter that's compatible with your computer and OS

You'll also need the power supply for the camera.

u/Mynameislouie · 1 pointr/GakiNoTsukai

I'm definitely gonna wait until I upgrade my VCR, do you have any experience with digitizing? I know there's specific equipment like this but are they drastically better than something like this?
Thanks for the hosting advice :)

u/xcjs · 1 pointr/AskTechnology

I meant backups of the digital files. :)

The tapes will wear down eventually, and the digital copies will be the most pristine copies you'll ever have. You'll want to keep backups of the digital copies in case they accidentally get deleted, corrupted, or lost.

Disclaimer - I've never used any product that promised to convert VHS tapes, but theoretically even something like this will work: https://www.amazon.com/Diamond-VC500-digital-converter-Software/dp/B000VM60I8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1541086768&sr=8-4&keywords=vhs+to+digital+converter

It appears to plug into an existing VCR. There may be better options on Amazon as it appears some people are having difficulty with that particular software.

Composite/S-Video only? No thank you. That would look dreadful.

u/Jotokun · -47 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Its not like you need outstanding quality. You can get a USB capture device for composite video for dirt cheap.
