I loved Robert Coker's Roller Coaster growing up, though admittedly I usually just looked at the pictures rather than reading anything.
Other than that, I enjoyed reading Dick Kinzel's biography; it's brisk and informative read about the guy responsible for the world's first 200, 300, and 400ft coasters. If you really love your son, you could track down a copy of Harry G. Traver: Legends of Terror - though at that point, could I be your son?
For the US enthusiasts, I recommend reading Dick Kinzels autobiography.
