I was certainly pretty nervous about what my German covers would look like, since I was aware of German publishers' prior tendencies to slap on any old cover from a different series. My husband has a German copy of one of Feist & Wurts's Mistress of Empire novels that has a Mercedes Lackey cover on it, complete with faithful reproduction of Lackey's characters.)

Also, it's not like foreign publishers usually say anything to you about covers or book releases or even title changes. I signed the contract, and then one day I got a google alert that pointed me to the amazon.de page where my translated book was for sale, with a new cover and title. I was pretty damn relieved to see the publisher had commissioned new art specifically for the books! (They turned out reasonably well: here's book 1, book 2).

I was extra amused to check inside and find out they'd translated out a bunch of profanity. (All the f-bombs were gone, basically. Things like "Fuck you, <X>" were now "Don't you talk, <X>".) But honestly, I'd rather have that than some of the translation horror stories I've heard from other authors.
