It's like a Phantom Drone but dressed as a pope.

u/KayakHipster · 3 pointsr/Kayaking

Thank you sir. It's a DJI phantom 3 standard.

If you're considering getting a quad, I'd very highly recommend getting a small cheap one, (around $30-40) and learning on that first. It's much better to crash one of those than the phantom. A tough landing and the gimbal or camera is toast.

dji phantom 3 is 500 bucks. and takes next to no skill to get it off the ground.

/u/precrime3 - I'd step up the video quality on the ground and underwater with a [$1697.99 Sony A6500 with the 16-50mm power zoom] (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mirrorless-Camera-16-50mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B01M4QXKS1//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) and a [$243 underwater housing] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FCXCN4K/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20).

This camera has 5-axis internal stabilization, so you won't need a gimbal - and it has a mic jack, so you can record direct to camera without the Zoom.

To leave room in the budget for the A6500, I'd step down to a [$399 2.7K Phantom 3 standard] (https://www.amazon.com/DJI-Phantom-P3-STANDARD-Quadcopter-Camera/dp/B013U0F6EQ//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) instead of the Mavic for aerial.

With this setup, you can travel light - and capture very high quality video on land, underwater and in the air.

The A6500 can produce 4K and slow motion image quality that looks like this:

Dude, I do 3D Photogrammetry with drones as well!

I use Agisoft Photoscan and 3DF Zephyr for 3D Mapping. I actually pirated them and they work great.

Honestly, hands down the best bang for your buck has to be Phantom 3. There are apps where it takes specific photographs based on the GPS and it's great for aerial mapping.

However, I really suggest the Phantom 4. There's tap to fly, collision avoidance, better battery life(better for larger areas), you name it!

The racers with the good motors like that sound crazy. I have a Syma X11c too but it's not powerful like that.

I really want one of these.

And this.

And today only $499!!! see here.

That's amazing, I'm thinking of buying one more just because...

Not a lot you can do, sorry. =(

From what I know about Amazon is that you have to be competitive in this space and/or have the buy box, and that generally means eating away at your margins.

u/BloodyBrownHole · 1 pointr/videography

$469. Just need to plug in a smartphone or tablet.

If you REALLY want to use the GoPro, then the 3D Robotics Solo w/ Gimbal is the way to go. The Solo was designed specifically for using a GoPro, so you get features like FPV, camera control, and stabilization right out of the box.

The problem with using a GoPro on a drone is that to get good photos or videos, you want to be able to see what the camera is seeing, and ideally control the camera settings from the ground. Otherwise, you're basically flying blind. And to do that, you need a First Person View system, or FPV, which typically adds another $100 or more to the cost of your drone setup if it's not already built-in. Plus, if it's not built-in, you're piecing together a lot of different systems, which introduces the chance for compatibility issues.

The reason people don't recommend a Phantom for flying a GoPro is that the cost of a Phantom 2, plus everything you'd need to connect the GoPro, is going to cost a lot more than a more current Phantom 3, and the features of the drone and camera aren't going to be as good.

DJI dropped the prices on the Phantom 3 so much when the Phantom 4 came out that it don't make sense to piece it all together yourself when you can just get a high quality drone, high quality camera, and FPV setup for less than $500. The Phantom 3 Standard for < $500 will outperform anything you can mount a GoPro to for less than $1,000 and the Phantom 3 Professional for ~ $850 has a camera that will outperform basically every GoPro on the market, and you won't have to post-process out the fisheye effect from the final video.

Basically, it comes down to budget:

About $475 new. Used you can maybe find them for $350. Probably your best bet for lower budget.

IMHO it's cause drones are a bit easier to get in to, people like shooting cool videos and stuff completely oblivious to their surroundings. I get the impression that's the cause of many issues with it, many are trying to shoot footage so they loiter with their drones and they're there to record footage.

Drones are somewhat easy to find in stores, and they're "in" so they're more likely to be given as gifts and etc. and people getting them don't do their research. While ones purchased as gifts tend to be the cheaper ones, people tend to be really careless operating these, running them in to trees, getting them beyond their operational range, into water and etc. They loiter too which is something RC planes can't really do.

RC aircraft are in my knowledge either racing or scale reproductions. While many larger drones are for carrying a camera payload to record footage.

There are racing quads but without the whole camera thing you have to visually track where the drone is. With the camera ones you can fly them farther than you can track with your eye.

I get the distinct impression that there are far more drone operators flying their drones near airports, police aerial pursuit situations, or recording aerial footage near sensitive areas than RC plane operators trying to do the same.

I like drones just fine, the footage they get is amazing it allows for helicopter type shots without renting a helicopter but some of the people using them lack complete awareness of what they're doing with them.

Here's a high end off the shelf one: https://www.amazon.com/DJI-CP-SB-000239-Matrice-600/dp/B01EL8TO30/
around 8-9 pounds with no payload with a 10 pound payload (camera usually)

Here's the most common (non-low end) camera carrying drone: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013U0F6EQ/
8 pounds weight, built in camera

These drones have 1 - 2 km range some have ranges of 5 km.

Phantom 3 Standard went down i see, $488 2 days ago, $460 today.

https://www.amazon.com/DJI-Phantom-Standard-Quadcopter-Camera/dp/B013U0F6EQ

And i've seen Pro just for $800, and i would invest into that.
Just returned from flying advanced, and that's awesome.

u/awesomecvl · 1 pointr/itookapicture

Here in the US the Advanced is over 50% more than the Standard. http://www.amazon.com/DJI-Phantom-Advanced-Quadcopter-Camera/dp/B00VSIT5UE

vs

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B013U0F6EQ

I'm just not sure because I don't really feel as if I would be confident enough to fly it more that a kilometer away

I would recommend starting with a Drone kit the linked one is < 250 and would minimize compatibility issues and easy the burden that comes with setup and configuration. You can use the various drone kits for sale on amazon to get example/ideas of all of the hardware you would need. If you want to start doing Photo/video and automated flights i would recommend some of the below drones. When you consider the cost in time, hardware, compatibility issues it sometimes is better to just get name brand drone because when you add in the transmitter, 300 in parts, gimbel and camera you would be in the 500 range which can get you one of the below all in one ready to fly drones.

u/23JM11 · 1 pointr/Multicopter

Just found this on amazon,

https://www.amazon.com/DJI-Phantom-P3-STANDARD-Quadcopter-Camera/dp/B013U0F6EQ

Am I missing something? Is a P3 different from Phantom 3? Or is it a major steal?

u/throwaway11111011111 · 1 pointr/teenagers

If you want to get into drones, I highly suggest this drone. It's not the most expensive but it's by DJI and they're pretty great when it comes to quadcopters and gimbals and cameras
