First, I'm sorry for your loss. I've lost several pets, and it still upsets me to this day. But remember that you gave them a good life, and that one day (don't rush it) you'll meet another puppy who will steal your heart.
Also, try this book if you'd like: Dog Heaven I don't know how you identify, but it's religious-based in the sense of it says God. I'm not religious however and I find it comforting, hearing about dogs having a dog-centered afterlife (its a picture book for the most part).
I'm so sorry. You grew up together and probably don't have many memories that don't include him. Even as a dog, he contributed to your becoming who you are, to your memories. It's so hard to lose those we love, and so very hard to know that time is approaching. In my field, we call it "anticipatory grieving", because you are already grieving the loss that you are about to experience. Know that he loves you too. Although I am not religious, I highly recommend the book "DOG HEAVEN" by Cynthia Rylant: http://www.amazon.com/Dog-Heaven-Cynthia-Rylant/dp/0590417010

Yellow lab? It's like whoever programmed them put all their stats in charisma and forgot everything else. Such sweet animals.
My mom used to read a book to me called Dog Heaven when I was a kid and wanted a dog more than anything else. Shit that book always got me to tear up.
EDIT: Screw it, bought it on Amazon for you. It'll be there Monday. RIP Madison <3 and again, sorry for your loss bud.
