From our FAQ in the sidebar:

>##Watching & Purchasing the Series

>###What order should I read/watch the series in? Can I start with DBZ? What about the movies and specials?
>---
>Start with Dragon Ball, then move on to Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai. DBZ Kai is DBZ with most of the episode padding and filler content (scenes not present in the original comic book) removed. DBZ Kai received a much more faithful-to-the-Japanese English dub than DBZ did, and as a result, it's often recommended for new viewers who do not wish to watch the series subtitled.

>The final story arc of Dragon Ball Kai has yet to be released outside of Japan. Because of this, if you choose to watch Kai (legally, and in English), you will need to switch to episode 200 of Dragon Ball Z after finishing episode 98 of Kai.

>When you're finished, you have two choices:

> The more complete route: watch the JSAT special and [Battle of Gods](http://www.kanzenshuu.com/movie/battle-of-gods/). From there, read [Jaco the Galactic Patrolman](http://www.kanzenshuu.com/manga/spin-offs/jaco/), and watch [Resurrection 'F'](http://www.kanzenshuu.com/movie/revival-of-f/). When finished, move on to Dragon Ball Super.

>
The quicker route: Skip straight to Dragon Ball Super, understanding that it takes place some time after the battle with Majin Buu, and will be adapting the two newest movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F' into story arcs, with some details changed.

>Dragon Ball GT and the rest of the movies/specials are separate from the main storyline, and are entirely optional. If you'd like to watch all of the movies and specials in the order released, use this list.

What is Dragon Ball Kai?

---
Dragon Ball Kai (known as Dragon Ball Z Kai in the west) is Dragon Ball Z with most of the episode padding and filler content (scenes not present in the original comic book) removed. Kai has a much more faithful-to-the-Japanese English dub than Z does, and as a result, it is often recommended for new viewers who do not wish to watch the series subtitled.

The Majin Buu arc of Dragon Ball Kai has yet to be released outside of Japan. Because of this, if you choose to watch Kai in English, you will need to switch to episode 200 of Dragon Ball Z after finishing episode 98.

While Kai was heavily censored for American television, it is available uncut on DVD and Blu-ray, though unfortunately, the first few episodes remain censored for content on all mediums.

---

What order should I read/watch the series in? Can I start with DBZ? What about the movies and specials?

---
Start with Dragon Ball, then move on to Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai.

When you're finished, you have a handful of choices:
