$120.51 Cheesecloth, both a bulk order from amazon and extra to cover 12' long tables. I made 15' runners for the option of drape for 18 tables.

~$20 Rit Dye (4 bottles)

~$10 for buckets, and RIP my favorite pair of cooking chopsticks.

Total $150, 16 man hours.

I originally wanted long strands of greenery, but for 18 12' long tables the costs were going to be too much. Alternatively, we could have rented the venue's table runners for $250, but I thought this might be a fun project as well as a way to save just a little bit. I loved the end product, but in retrospect this was a LOT of manual labor. Not necessarily in time, but in effort. I've never dyed anything before and taking on a few pounds of fabric was a serious workout all weekend.

I did some early samples to test color. On one hand, I dyed sola flowers which always turned out too bright. For the cheesecloth runners, I continually shot too dark. it took me a few tries to get the color combination I wanted. I did use Rit's color palette but had to use a heavier concentration of dye to water and more aquamarine than blue. (Can someone please explain to me why the heck it takes aquamarine and royal blue to make CLASSIC BLUE.)

My biggest mistake though, was thinking, "I want to dye them together so they all turn out the same color, I'll cut them later." MISTAKE. I should have precut them and dyed them in the same batch. But I didn't, and ended up with 80 yards of knotted mess in a bucket. Rit's dye instructions state that the first 10 minutes are critical for the dye to take, and so I WORKED this knotted mess (of course the weekend of a heat wave) for ten minutes only to find a knotted portion of WHITE that didn't get soaked. Luckily, with the way the cheesecloth moves and was laid out it wasn't noticeable that a section was lighter than the rest. But on top of just the dying, stirring for an hour, there was also washing the mess, drying the mess, and then trying to unfold it all. Once sorted out, it was easy, but it took many hours of me huddled over knotted cheesecloth reviewing all the mistakes I'd ever made in my life. Highly recommended.

I imagine dying with a washing machine would be much less frustrating but I was afraid to put our apartment rental machine at risk.

$4/piece is fairly reasonable imo. If you figure, that's about $1-2/ yd fabric. There is a tableclothfactory website that might have something you can use.

Edit:

organza

chiffon

Edit edit:. Another commenter warned that this density of cheesecloth might not be the best for this application, and that you might want to use a higher gauge. However, I'll leave the original link for reference (and you might be looking for something this loose, who knows)

this one

Edit: it us pricey up front, but the price per square foot makes it worth it IMO

Sorry, just seeing this! Here's the one I bought. Just ordered two more packages (so 3 total). I think you're totally right about the hot water shrinking it. That didn't occur to me in the moment. I think I'll try slightly cooler water this next time and see if that still gives me the color I want.

I thought the quality from amazon was great! That seems to be best price and you can't go wrong with 2 day shipping. If you find something cheaper, let me know?
