The book The Drunkard's Walk may be good reading material. It's about how chance influences life, and that success is overvalued. Many people who are successful could have failed and many people who were nearly successful never knew because one missed chance or because they stopped too early.

What this book teaches you is that success is relative, and that an average life is not so uncommon. It's quite the opposite, it fairly common to be average. Most of us are!
