I just hope that we have a D&D game with Lockwood in prison or at least a reference because of the work that Sam has done.

In regards to Al-Quadim, Maztica, Oriental Adventures and whatnot... The same ol bizarros also decry that stuff as problematic and cultural appropriation. I haven't seen that documentary, but I have a question: what was the focus of it? Like First and Second edition mainly, or did every edition get equal coverage? I bring it up because with the big Art & Arcana book they put out last year, 80% of the book or more was devoted to the TSR days with the rest barely touching on the WOTC years. Pretty telling if you ask me.

Whichever of you publishers reads this thread, I would love something like the Art and Arcana book for DnD but for board games

This is my rec. It just came out not too long ago so unless he just bought it for himself, he probably won't have it. It's not specifically a game book but it is related, and great for anyone who likes the art and history of the game.

On Wednesday, 10/24 at 2 PT /r/DnD will be hosting an AMA by the authors of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ART & ARCANA. Come ask Michael Witwer, Kyle Newman, Jon Peterson, and Sam Witwer your questions

/r/DnD is proud to present another AMA from a great crew.

>When it comes to the history of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, the truth is often stranger than fiction. We’re Michael Witwer (Empire of Imagination), Kyle Newman (Fanboys; Barely Lethal), Jon Peterson (Playing at the World), and Sam Witwer (Star Wars; Being Human), authors of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ART & ARCANA, an illustrated guide to the history and evolution of the beloved role-playing game told through the paintings, sketches, illustrations, and visual ephemera behind its creation, growth, and continued popularity. Ask us your questions on the evolution of the game, how the art has influenced pop culture, and anything else D&D.

>Out now, our book provides an unprecedented look at the visual evolution of the brand, showing its continued influence on the worlds of pop culture and fantasy. Inside the book, you’ll find more than seven hundred pieces of artwork—from each edition of the core role-playing books, supplements, and adventures; as well as Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance novels; decades of Dragon and Dungeon magazines; and classic advertisements and merchandise; plus never-before-seen sketches, large-format canvases, rare photographs, one-of-a-kind drafts, and more from the now-famous designers and artists associated with DUNGEONS & DRAGONS. Also available is the special edition, featuring exclusive illustrations by superstar D&D artist Hydro74, and 10 poster-sized re-creations of classic DUNGEONS & DRAGONS artwork as well as a pamphlet-sized, unpublished original version of the game’s most infamous adventure module and deathtrap Tomb of Horrors, written by DUNGEONS & DRAGONS co-creator Gary Gygax.

Could probably use this bad boy for source information. https://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Art-Arcana-History/dp/0399580948/ref=nodl_. This is one of many books about dnds history and inception. I recently got this one as a gift, awesome stuff if he likes D&D: the ART&ARCANA book. There is even a special version with extras if you want something fancier (which I haven't checked TBH).

Maybe you can get that for 35 in a local bookshop, so he can trade if necessary.

Yeah I wish I could find more of this tbh. I've got Peter Hogarth's 1979 book on order: https://www.amazon.com/Dragons-Peter-Hogarth-Val-Clery/dp/B002MS32KI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549489990&sr=8-1&keywords=peter+hogarth+dragons

The D&D Art and Arcana book that came out last fall is wonderful, it covers all eras of D&D art.

https://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Art-Arcana-History/dp/0399580948/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549490028&sr=8-1&keywords=dungeons+and+dragons+art+and+arcana

But it's really cool sometimes to revisit a time before the Pern stuff, before Spyro, Toothless, Temeraire etc. when there was just Tolkien, early D&D, the psychedelic era and so on. If you know of more references let me know, it's an aesthetic I can't get enough of.

For a really fun history of the different iterations of D&D, check out the book “Art and Arcana”. It’s chock full of great information.
