I know the Dymo is a pretty expensive purchase but I honestly have no regrets. It is so easy to use and speeds up my process big time!

The Dymo LabelWriter 450 is a convenient, inexpensive thermal printer under $50 that might meet your needs. Generic labels and roll paper (without adhesive) are available which make this printer very inexpensive to operate. I'm not sure what file formats are acceptable, you may have to check the manual for additional information. Most likely, you will need to use a special app to print to this device.

EDIT: The bundled LabelWriter software appears to allow printing of text and images, in addition to standard label and barcode formats. There is also a Linux CUPS driver available from Dymo that will reportedly allow you to print PostScript to this device. The latter option would clearly be a project for an enthusiast - see link below.

So, I know you specified that you want a cheap method, but I'm putting this out there for others that are reading as well. A DYMO thermal printer & the labels are so easy to use and they save me a ton of time. After I finally stopped hand-writing addresses on each envelope, I tried the print & tape method but it's inefficient and a pain in my ass.

Having had much frustration in the past with laser printers I was hesitant, but the little DYMO has led me to once again have faith in printers. It is thermal, so there's no ink allowing you to print and stick immediately.
No I don't work for DYMO. I'm sure there are other thermal printers that work just fine but this is the only one I've used. Labels are affordable as well.

Side note: If you aren't printing labels through Etsy, you're missing out on postage discounts for national orders. In the US, anyway.

I personally use a Dymo 4XL which works fantastic for personal bottle labels. It's all B&W, so if you are looking for something colorful, that won't cut it.

Professional looking labels are expensive, however, sometime in the future abdada is going to get his fancy ass vinyl printer working, and if there is enough demand he will offer labels to the DIY community somewhere around $0.09 / label + shipping costs.

I know the $230 price tag on the 4XL is steep, so maybe the 450 Turbo would be better? I've never used it, but it is significantly cheaper, and is well reviewed on amazon.

We use a Dymo 4XL, it works great for shipping labels.
Anything smaller than it's labels are frowned upon by usps/ups/fedex from what I understand.

I've been using this one with no issues http://www.amazon.com/DYMO-1755120-LabelWriter-Thermal-Printer/dp/B002M1LGJ4 I wouldn't buy it at the current price but it goes on sale to about 6l $60 pretty often.

This will probably get booted for being an affiliate link. Best bet is to repost unlinked. https://www.amazon.com/DYMO-LabelWriter-Thermal-Printer-1755120/dp/B002M1LGJ4

I used this: https://www.amazon.com/DYMO-LabelWriter-Thermal-Label-Printer/dp/B002M1LGJ4/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1493149182&sr=8-5&keywords=printer+label it prints the address and the USPS shipping info all in one label, i slap it in the box and done. The one you have can probably do the same.

If youre a small clothing company I would hop on eBay and grab a deal on poly mailers^[1] and use those. If youre doing this all out of your house, I would recommend buying a 4x6 thermal printer^[2] as thats the standard for a lot of shipping labels, but if a $200 printer isnt immediately in the budget you can always print labels onto normal printer paper and tape them to your packages. The printer will be a lot easier and a lot more professional, but its pricey right out the gate for some.

USPS should be your standard shipping method and would probably start at USPS Priority with additional faster options if really necessary. USPS Priority is quick with its 2-3 day delivery window, is pretty cheap, and comes with tracking so its easy to follow up on orders if customers dispute. Depending on the volume that youre going to be shipping, USPS outgoing packages can be picked up at your home or you can just drop them off at the nearest office to you... they generally have a large bin inside for people that have already paid for their postage and are just dropping off.

I dont know how you are receiving your shirts from your printer, but you are going to want to pre-sort them all by size and design and fold them individually before you start taking orders. You want to be as organized and ready to go as possible, so that once you receive an order, its quick to get your packages out. If you knock out as much of the work beforehand, then its be a more fluid process to get your stuff out and customers will appreciate it. Just like when you personally buy something, you like for it to come in a timely manner. You can take out a lot of the frustration and hassle by being as organized as possible.

Im going to assume that this isnt your full-time job. I would get all of your merch as organized as possible with your shipping materials as organized as possible and then package orders every night at the same time after work. Then the next morning on the way to work, drop off the orders from the day before... or drop them off on the way home from work and just make sure that you know that that will add an extra day before the customer received it. Only you will know the best time to drop stuff off, but either way I recommend that you set a standard system and stick to it.

There are always new clothing brands coming out and just as quickly fading away. Anyone can set up a small store online... what is going to set you apart is unique designs that people want, quality of materials, customer service, and marketing. Youre not going to be a millionaire if you slap your brand name in a basic font onto a Gildan t-shirt and have slow ship speeds (Side note: ASSC did exactly that, but Kanye West wore their sweatshirt so the hype was real)

Your best resource for information will probably be /r/streetwearstartup (even if your brand is themed for a different market) and /r/smallbusiness . The first sub will have tons of people in it doing exactly what youre trying to do and the second might help with the technical business side of things like paying income tax or applying for a business license or anything. I successfully run a small home-based niche clothing and accessory business, so feel free to PM me with any questions.
