The original book on this topic is Eat Right For Your Type. That book makes the case that there are variations in human metabolism, and your blood type is a good indicator for your metabolic type. A nutritionist recommended that book to me and it's really helped me and my spouse-- I'm type O, she's type A; it was initially hard for both of us to stay healthy eating the same meals.
The "Blood Type Diet" panned on the BDA site linked by SqueakyPea looks like a distorted, oversimplified version of the "Eat Right For Your Type" book. Did some glamour magazine pick up the idea and get it horribly wrong?
I take probiotics because I had a stool test and I had zero of them in my gut.
And I only take lactase when I'm having milk or cheese. (Derp.)
I tried the blood type diet for awhile, and stopped because I had the neighbor from hell and don't know if I would have been able to tell that it worked. (And it was a pain in the heiney for type O.) But my gut was happier, and I lost weight.
Also later, I realized later that mozzarella (one of the "normal" cheeses I could eat on the diet) doesn't give me problems while cheddar does.
