What a terrific accomplishment! Way to go! Buy him an Amazon Dot (link) and let your son talk with Alexa :)

New Amazon Echo Dot is available for pre-order today. I already have a big Echo and I'm debating getting the new Dot to hook up to my HT system. Apartment life doesn't feel like it needs two smart assistants, but I could just put the big echo in the bedroom?

The windows have a IR reduction film on them which reduces 97% of the infrared light coming through... so the evening sun setting over the water doesn't bake the room.

They are also double-paned, and the inner pane is an ElectroChromic layer, which can provide rapid visible-light tint at the push of a button - perfect for when its's time for sleep or the sun is just too bright the next morning after a night at the bars.

But why use buttons? An Amazon Echo Dot built into a nook in the wall can communicate with a SmartThings hub in the small hand-carved-wood electronics cabinet (out of frame here) and not only activate the EC windows but also the motorized track on the wooden shutters outside - for those times when you do want total privacy. A simple voice command makes it happen. It even anticipates your needs with daily schedule settings so the soft morning light can wake you up by retracting the shutters and setting the EC glass to transparent each morning at dawn. A Nest thermostat keeps everything balmy or cozy depending on the time of day, or day of the week.

While you're in the bath, of course, the Dot will play your current Audible book from your Kindle collection over the built-in-ceiling speakers using its Bluetooth radio, or switch to that classical Pandora channel you've been cultivating for years when you're tired of the book and just want to rest.

Finally, the two small lights in the alcoves in the rear wall are actually multi-colored and dimmable wifi-connected LEDs, so they can flash various colors when different events happen, such as the local fruit-&-vegetable vendor bringing your semi-weekly order to your gate downstairs or getting a phone call from a particular person in your favorites list.

You live a comfortable life.

It seems that Ecobee, TP-Link, and Philips Hue bundles are still present on the US site and available for preorder. See https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DFKC2SO. I don't see Bose's deal any longer.

For UK, Netatmo and Wemo still have bundles.

Why would you need it to be sold at a WF? Why don't you just buy it online?

Edit: Oh the price. You can still get the Dot for the same price on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DFKC2SO/ref=fs_ods_fs_aucc_bt

Howdy. I hope I can be of assistance.

It sounds like you need something small and cheap. We've all been there.

What you have picked out is the way to go. I would have recommended the MB42 instead, but those went up in price yesterday apparently.

They will not sound as good as those headphones. The general consensus around here is that headphones sound better for the same price. However, I hate wearing headphones, so I listen to music exclusively with speakers.

Now, what to expect with them? They sound amazing for their price. And for their size. In that price and size bracket, those are the best you can get.

For hooking them up and what not, I recommend maybe an Amazon Echo Dot. You can hook it up via 3.5mm and play from spotify and bluetooth, set alarms, and stop them just with your voice. There is a bit of lag, but if you're listening to podcasts it doesn't really matter. If you already have the bluetooth receiver that you mentioned, you don't need the dot. Also, don't worry about them getting loud enough. They should do just fine.

I'll make a list of everything you'll need.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Those micca covo-s speakers

Cheap but good little amp. I don't have one of these because I'm not a fan of the looks, but they get great reviews and a lot of people really like them.;

Speaker wire. Amazon Basics makes great stuff. If you want, you can get 100 feet of it for an extra $2 I think. You don't need banana plugs. They're for quick swapping of speakers, and if you only have one pair it doesn't really matter.

Simple wire stripper. Should work just fine.

Cable to plug it in. Amazon Basics stuff is excellent quality. Especially this cable. I was honestly blown away with it when I got it. And I'm not kidding. This cable is amazing.

Your lucky day. The echo dot is on sale

-----------------------------------------------------

That's it. Everything you need. Enjoy!

But it says right here "#1 Best Seller in Electronics"

u/sharkamino · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

The Echo Dot (2nd generation on sale for $20) isn't meant to listen to music on directly or to pair two of them together for stereo. That's why it has a 3.5mm output and bluetooth transmitter. It's 1" speaker is just there for interacting with Alexa, not really for music. If you really wanted to listen to music on an Amazon speaker that is what the larger Echo Plus is for with it's 3" speaker which is better, but still not as good as hooking up a Dot to powered bookshelf speakers or a stereo receiver, mini amp, or AV receiver with passive speakers.

It's a fake plant, seated atop an Amazon Echo Dot

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/raspberry_pi

It's $50 in the USA. So when you consider it's $35 of the raspberry pi, add in $10 for a decent microSD card, at least another $5 for a quality power supply, $8 for the official case, add in some extra there as well for shipping. It quickly gets well above the price of an echo dot when you include all the needed accessories to even reach the same level of functionality.

Like has been said earlier, if you've got all these parts laying around unused from previous projects it's not such a bad deal. To go out and buy all the parts for the specific reason of turning it into an Echo is silly.

u/Arkanin · 2 pointsr/news
u/kitikitish · 2 pointsr/Reformed

$50 for Raspberry Pi 3 kit (tiny computer)

$45 for Aeotec ZStick

~$40 for GE Smart Switch

It's a bit of a pain to set up, but it's completely configurable. You can get motion/temperature/humidity sensors, door/window sensors, water sensors, tons of sensors...and set up triggers/logic to do about whatever you want. Amazon just released these guys and people are talking about putting them all over their house for voice activated automation.

Currently, our bedroom light turns on at 6:43 a.m. on weekdays because we should definitely be awake by then but if not it will help us get up. If the light is on at some time after we should be at work, it will automatically turn off. Our other smart switch controls the living room light and when motion is detected in there after sunset the light will turn on at ~10% brightness as a night light, then turn off again after ~5 minutes.

People wire up their garage doors, if you really want to spend some money you can have automated blinds/shutters on your windows, there are smart locks that you can enter security codes into remotely...but we are starting pretty small.

Oh, and as my original post suggested, lights and whatnot can be controlled remotely. Turns out our router have a service that lets me fairly easily VPN in so I can access lights and whatnot from just about anywhere.

there's an option to bundle it with the basic Hue starter kit for 99.99 (white bulbs only, not colored).

Joshua Jay said he bought a chinese knock off of this that is just as good as the originals he left in hotels, but it has a hilarious chinese accent for all the voice commands.

So take your mic rig down to chinatown and test it on a bunch of stuff then buy the best there.

You might be able to get it to run off of an Echo or Dot. Then you have a baller ass PA system that you can use for other stuff outside of the club.

u/GermyMac · 2 pointsr/hockey

It's a voice controlled device sold by Amazon that can control your lights, thermostat, music and a lot more. I got one for my birthday and I love it.

u/vicpylon · 1 pointr/homegym

I use the Amazon Echo Dot. It allows me to set a timer by voice alone ("Alexa, set a 2 minute timer" )and not have to leave the bench. Also doubles as a handy control system for streaming music. Cheaper alternatives obviously exist, but at $50.00 the convenience overcame my thrift.

Only downside is I would prefer to have it set timers without giving it the full speech (as above) or to run intervals automatically. Still investigating options to make this work.

I’ve used this little hack for customers on a budget...

amazon echo

You can use your home WiFi as the audio bridge greatly extending your range.

IMPORTANT! - this is not an amplifier, so it will not power your speakers. This will have to connect to an amp, ideally one that can handle 2 additional zones.

This is not the most elegant solution but for less than $50 you can have similar functionality to a sonos or like system.

Steam

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes

Chromecast? I know I'd like to get one.

Or maybe the Amazon Echo Dot?

If you have a Fire TV, then sure, otherwise no, you would need to get either an echo dot with the remote or a fire TV with the remote. A fire TV stick is probably the best option if you want TV, but the echo dot might still be on sale for $30 on amazon

edit: it is on sale https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Echo-Dot-Portable-Bluetooth-Speaker-with-Alexa-Black/dp/B01DFKC2SO that works out to like 22.5 pounds or something

u/mrbearit · 1 pointr/sonos

Courtesy of Black Friday deals you can buy a Sonos Play 1 for $150 and buy an Echo Dot for $30. Put the $20 towards saving up later for another Play 1 and then use them in a stereo pair.

u/relativityboy · 1 pointr/smarthome

Already good comments here, but TBF the best remote things are outlets and wall switches. That way if/when you hit a switch to turn something off the 'old' way it will still respond if you want it on.

Also, you need a hub. Smartthings or Wink.
The rest are worthless (Hue hub and all the other hubs). IMO Philips Hue is lame. If you want colored bulbs go get Sylvania lightify (cheaper, less crap in your house since it doesn't need its own hub).

Ideal starter setup would be an echo dot $50, a hub $100, two wall switches ($30ea) (for unswitched outlets) and a couple wall paddle switches ($30ea). That much hardware would set you back about $270, but would add a fair bit of fun and convenience.

u/jryanishere · 0 pointsr/amazonecho

You can not use the Dot AS a bluetooth speaker for any device.

It will only BROADCAST itself to other bluetooth speakers.

EDIT: Neat, downvotes for the right answer: https://www.amazon.com/All-New-Echo-Dot-2nd-Generation/dp/B01DFKC2SO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478871730&sr=8-1&keywords=echo+dot

Scroll down to the bottom of the page under bluetooth connectivity.
