It's a self written program (along with the code running on the Arduino) using the Processing (basically Java) programming language. I might put something up in the Arduino subreddit soon once I refine it. These are the LEDs I bought.

It's cheaper to buy the controller and RGB strip separately and use your own external power supply (most folks will have a bunch of these lying around), or get the strip and controller with a molex adapter or crimp your own molex adapter (you can crimp this to one of those 2-pin molex-to-fan adapters) so you can run it directly off your internal power supply.

I think it's more cost effective to go with a Ryzen 5 1600 + B350 motherboard. It'll have no problems with 1080p / 60 FPS and has a longer potential upgrade path. You can take the $100 saved and put it toward 2x8GB DDR4-2800+ RAM or change out your single stick for 2x4GB sticks of RAM and pocket the difference.

Personally, I wouldn't really bother spending that much money on RGB fans for the case. I'd rather get a roll of 5050 LED strips on Amazon and plug it into the motherboard. I got several meters for under $10 and a pack of solderless connecters for under $10 and was able to light up my case and my wifes case with lots left over. Just make sure you get a board with a couple RGB headers, and you'd be good to go.

Yes, they're very much plug and play. One end of the 16' strip has a female DC jack that you plug right in to a male power supply. I opted to add a dimmer switch that just plugs in between the two. The other end of the strip has two bare wires (positive and negative) which is used to connect another set of strips. Connecting the sets will take some soldering. But if you're only sticking with 16' or less, you're golden. You can simply cut the strip at the inidicated point (I believe every 5 LEDs).
The whole strip is backed with 3M adhesive tape for easy application to whatever surface you're mounting it to.

I opted for white, because I didn't want a disco in my bedroom. :)

However, I like the LEDs so much that I'm thinking of getting a few RGB sets and just using them as Christmas lights when the time comes. I haven't done the math, but I figure @ $17 per 16 feet, it should be pretty comparable to purchasing Christmas lights in the off-season. On top of that, they're pretty damn discreet when they're not lit. You can leave them hanging all year round and not cause eye sore of left over Christmas lights.

The transformer for the linked set is a bit different than the one I used, but I don't think it's any more complicated. Additionally, it looks like there's a special adapter for connecting multiple sets -- which makes it easier than soldering.

Sure!

So it is an Arduino Uno that I am using. I used this $10 RGB LED strip HERE. Basically, the Arduino is hidden in the front of the case, foam-taped to the bottom of the case. I leave it plugged in to a USB cable at all times, and that cable is routed out the back of the case and into one of the back USB ports.

As far as support electronics go, I made my own small circuit board. You will need a MOSFET for each LED color channel (meaning 3, RGB). The Arduino will control the power going to the LEDs using PWM through the MOSFETs. The LED strip is wired directly into my power supply 12V rail.

The Arduino's code simply waits for a three byte serial command, one byte for each color. The Python program I wrote sends these commands.

Might I suggest mounting your strip lighting to EVA and then potting your leads with a high strength epoxy or hot glue. We're getting pretty good results affixing our lights to a flexible but more rigid than fabric surface - kind of like an armored suit.

I'm a big fan of neopixels! I got a chance to use em in a project earlier in the season and they are a lot of fun. Pricey though. For this halloween suit we went for quantity over quality. 1500 leds but all "dumb lights".

I am looking at this led strip and this is the LCD Screen i have currently (the Waveshare 4inch RPi LCD (A), 320×480, IPS)
If you look at this picture you can see which pins the LCD screen it uses.

And for the LED Lights, It seems like I need at the very least 1 ground, 1 5v pin and one empty gpio pin (if i use a relay). If i wanted RGB i could also specify any 3 gpio pins according to this

I was looking at using a relay to control the light (I don't care about the color i just want light to be able to see) but I don't really have a preference how the lights turn on, i just want to be able to control it with the PI instead of a physical switch.

The LED strip you linked won't work with that ballast. Those are WS2812 addressable LEDs, they require a controller with a clock output, the FLS-PP only outputs a PWM signal to each R/G/B/W line of the strip. It can be used with something like this:

If you are going to be using it indoors, get one that is not "waterproof" or it will be a pain to cut and splice. You will also need a controller and a power supply. You can buy all three together for about $30 or get them separately. Check out the first review on this amazon page.

I have These.

The kit for this deal are much much better.

I was able to run my 3000mhz stick at 2933mhz with DOCP settings, and the G.Skill RGB memory I bought was NOT on the QVL list.

This deal's RAM are Samsung B-Die and faster and will likely hit 3200 and not be off like my sticks.

In regards to RGB control, I'd assume Aura-Sync will work as well on these 3200mhz sticks as it does with my 3000mhz sticks.

Good luck...it's a great board...also, if your looking to use those RGB pins, a generic RGB 5050 strip will work just fine, no need to spend extra $$$ on CableMod lights. Just make sure you cut them to less than 2meters of length.

So I originally bought this and this but the long strip when connected to the receiver only displayed blue. (The two small strips that came with it worked fine). So I bought this and used the power cable from the other receiver and it worked pretty well. Whenever I turn it on, it always goes to a random color, even though I just prefer green. I am sure there is a better set up out there, but this works for me.

I have also heard the Ikea Dioder is very popular, but I do not have any experience with it.

Does each section of the strip have to change color individually? Or can the whole strip change together?

If yes to the first question, follow what /u/UrFavSoundTech says.

Otherwise, for a much cheaper solution, you can buy plain 4 pin RGB strips ($10/16 ft), and a RGB DMX dimmer ($20). You can cut the strips up; there is a cut point every ~3 inches.

Make sure you get a good 12V power supply. This is a long strip. You'll need at least 15A. If it gets dimmer towards one end you can bring power cables to the other end.

LEDs cheaper and higher pixel density. No more than 2M per RGB header according to Asus. Or you could skip the headers and step up your game to some better RGB for not too much more

Edit, as a side note I used these to extend from the motherboard and GPU RGB headers to under my desk but I rarely turn them on and never got around to using more than 1 so I have 2 empty extension cables behind my desk.

just buy the typical 16 foot spool off Amazon for like 10 bucks.. cut it to your own length (2 meters probably max supported on an RGB header), plug it into the RGB header.

If your motherboard has headers for them, like an Asus with Aura, then they'll work. If you have the headers, I'd go for a spool of RGB 5050 type LED strips. You can get one that's like 25 feet for 10 bucks or so, and just cut to size. You may need some of the connectors which are also cheap. The spools usually have 2 connectors, one on each end.

Whats the benefit of 5050 over 3528 (it seems like the difference is the coloring?)?

I figured it might be good to get a strip with a bunch of color variations to get more of the spectrum etc. Is the warm white more desirable? I was reading elsewhere that green or blue light was good for veg. link
