I really recommend the book mentioned in the article, Rosina Lippy-Green's English with an Accent: Language, Ideology and Discrimination in the United States.
It is one of the best written books I've come across on the topic and very accessible even if you don't have a strong knowledge of sociolinguistics.
Also, nice to see some love for sociolinguistics on this sub!
In a nutshell, you can take out a lot of what you were taught about English grammar and throw it out the window. A huge number of the "rules" we were taught have no actual basis in linguistics or the natural structure of our language. What we were presented with as "correct" English is just one dialect among many, and the only difference between a "good" dialect and a "bad" one is who speaks it. (Perfectly valid linguistic features are taught as being "bad" or "lazy" purely because they're not used by rich educated white men from large cities in the North.)
If you're currently a college or graduate school student, I'd recommend the hell out of a linguistics course (sociolinguistics, if you can). If you're not a student but you're up for some interesting reading, I always recommend the shit out of American English by Walt Wolfram and Natalie Schilling-Estes and English with an Accent by Rosina Lippi-Green.
