You open the lid and let it sit. As time passes, it will slowly start shrinking. Once it gets very small, it's done doing its thing. It's been great for old-cat-pee smell and general dog smells from previous tenants (uuugh), and I've successfully used it to de-cigarette two cars previously owned by smokers. Should do the trick in a small space like a pantry. It has a faint soapy smell.
