Get your EMT. Better yet, get your paramedic. That first part will take 160 hours of classroom time; the second part will be about 2000 hours of classroom + practical, but it vastly increases your chances of getting a firefighting slot.
Locally (Phoenix metro), there are about 200 applicants for every firefighting slot. Don't get too optimistic.
Know someone on the fire department, or at least spend some time at the station doing ride-alongs. Firefighters don't like to hire people that don't fit in.
Practice for the CPAT physical test. I recommend a 60 pound sack of sand in a backpack and a tall flight of stairs.
Don't know how things are out there, but if there's a split department (volunteer + part-time + full time), start volunteering somewhere.
Get a copy of Essentials of Firefighting. Every day, read a chapter. Repeat until you're sick of the fucking book and can spit out answers.

Really, it ain't that tough, but we're past the days of putting the wet stuff on the hot stuff. There's a lot more to it than there used to be.
