My old scale would "remember" your last weight, and if you were within a pound or two of your previous weight, it would just display the previous weight. I didn't think it was possible for an inanimate object to be lazy up until I discovered that.

Edit: wound up buying this scale, which works the right way, after specifically looking for one that doesn't do this (seems to be a widespread problem).

u/cheerful_cunt · 6 pointsr/xxfitness

Ive used and liked this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3J9G1W/

However, different reading can be due to an old battery or using it on an uneven surface. Even if you are using it somewhere solid like on bathroom tiles, the floor can still be uneven - I'd check that it actually doesn't wobble before using it and see if it still gives you inconsistent readings before buying anew one.

Stick with your scale. You've lost 12 pounds. It doesn't matter if you went from 285 to 273 or 269 to 257. You still lose the same amount of weight.

In the meantime, you should really upgrade to a digital scale. They're relatively cheap. They last forever. And they're more accurate.

Here is one for $20:

Absolutely. This shit's hard, but it's all doable.

Set your goals, figure out your plan to achievement, but remember that you're going to fail every now and again. This is normal. Just take it one day at a time.

Here's a few more tools I personally needed in my belt before I really began to start gaining serious momentum.

A food scale - The best thing you can do is spreadsheet out your food you eat in a day. Christ, this was so hard for me, but adding up the nutritional information on to-the-gram portions was the ultimate step to weight loss. Is it boring eating the same shit every day? You betcha. But it all feels right when you start to...

Weigh yourself every morning after you piss and log it in a spreadsheet This was like the last piece of the pendant I needed to unlock the giant door of "Discipline". Holy fuck, I cannot understate how important this was for me. Being able to look at where you were yesterday, or 14 days ago, and see with actual fact where you were... Eating the same shit every day strictly for nutrition all of a sudden became okay to me. I suffer from massive depression, and food was my big comfort. But seeing this data just greased the cogs and the machine began to move with a speed I couldn't manage in the year prior.

On the plus side, my entire diet is available at Costco. So even though it takes time to wash pounds of chicken, weigh it out to 300g (+/- 10g) and bag it up, I'm saving a ton of money in the process. Chicken there is $2.99/lb, at Safeway it's $7.29/lb. I still buy my broccoli there, though, because $2.49/lb is totally acceptable given the taste. Cutting up crowns of broccoli and steaming them is infinitely more tasty than the pre-cut florette bags.

Good luck, man. I wholeheartedly mean it. It's tough going, but if you are absolutely fed up with the current state of your body and lifestyle, the progress means so much.

u/bladedrummer · 4 pointsr/loseit

You can really google that information, or just look it up on amazon. I mean, there are scales with 25k reviews, over 4 stars and under $30. What can we possibly say that isn't covered by that amount of data?

I just ordered one from Amazon and love it! I've put multiple weights on it and it's right on the dot. It was a little pricier than I was hoping but I'm really happy with it. I'm not sure it's available on Prime anymore though :(

u/acciointernet · 3 pointsr/loseit

I was just struggling with this question too! I think I'm just going to buy another one. I looked on Amazon and bought their recommended one, which had a TON of reviews and over 4 stars.

u/Deacalum · 3 pointsr/loseit

Not OP but I'm also a fan of the daily weigh in and this is the scale I use. I've had no issues with it and it's always been pretty accurate, to the point that it closely matches what the scale at my doctor's office says.

I've had the scale for a little over a year. Never had to change batteries, although the daily weigh in is a more recent habit.

u/AvesAvi · 3 pointsr/loseit

The Etekcity scale is the Amazon's Choice scale, but there's a worrying amount of reviews saying the scale randomly shattered without being touched.

The EatSmart scale has super good reviews praising its accuracy, and a lot less reports of the thing spontaneously shattering.

Anybody have some anecdotes with these?

u/iWearTightSuitPants · 3 pointsr/Fitness

I got a decent one for less than $20 on Amazon.

(Well, at least it seems to be decent so far. I'm not a scale expert, I don't know what makes a good scale)

u/shakatay29 · 3 pointsr/xxketo

Buy a new scale and keep it in one spot. You're already all over the map when you move it around, so I think your (not ridiculous) fear of the electric one is valid, but misguided. Scales actually read better when they stay in one spot and don't move around a lot. Also, the floor material can change the scale. Don't weigh on carpets, try to make sure the floor is level.

FWIW, I was also terrified about this when I just purchased my new scale which I absolutely love. I was weighing at the gym with one of those sliding balance ones and was convinced there was a five pound difference. Turned out to be half a pound, and easily attributed to user error. Because your scale is all over the map, think about the peace of mind you'll have once you get a digital scale that you will leave in one place to make sure it stays accurate. You got this!!!

I got that thing. I’m not sure how to recalibrate it? But it’s been doing this the entire time I’ve had it. I’m wondering if it’s the floor I’m using but I don’t really have anywhere else to put it because my parents are controlling and would flip out.

u/toxik0n · 2 pointsr/loseit

I've been using this scale for about 2 years now and I've found it extremely accurate.

I bought it for use for a workplace weight loss competition, where it accurately weighed about 20 people for weeks. It only gave us trouble for one person who was over 400lbs.

After that, I took it home and my fiance and I have been using it since. It's always been very accurate for us.

Another bonus is that the top of the scale is completely smooth glass, so cleaning it is really quick. Just a quick paper towel wipe, and there are no nooks or crannies to deal with.

This is the one I use and I find it gives me the same weight as my doctor's office

u/reggiesan · 2 pointsr/keto

Etekcity (link) has a scale that is $18 and is pretty accurate. Doesn't do anything fancy, but it looks nice and goes up to 400 lbs.
EDIT: Not the best scale. But a good scale.

u/PlatosApprentice · 2 pointsr/weightroom

Looking forward to my DL BBB day! Should be a fun death!

I'm concerned the newly opened 'powerlifting' gym I've been going to isn't going to make it :/ I've been going for about a month now, and I've probably only seen 4-5 people in their when I've worked out, and I'm there 4 times a week. I really want to see the place succeed because I like the facility and the owner is awesome, but I'm just not sure that the steps to get members are there. Maybe they are, IDK, but I'm not sure if the steps to get members are being actively taken. I'd hate to see the place not stay open because of all the rad equipment that's there that was bought for the place. I mean, it's been awesome to ditch the crowd at other places, but it'd be nice to know that the place isn't in constant threat of losing money, ya know?

I've asked this the last two days, so sorry for spamming the question, but does anyone have any scale recommendations? I've had this one in my cart for a while but have waited to purchase anything.

u/TinderThrowItAwayNow · 2 pointsr/powerlifting

I bought the cheapest one I found on Amazon. It was 15ish CAD. Morning of comp it weighed me in at 92.8kg

Two hours later, I weight in at 92.2/4kg.

Not too bad.

u/AreoHotahSpeedWagon · 2 pointsr/keto

I've got this etekcity scale and I love it. I've got nothing but good things to say. Great scale for under $20.

It's just the scale. All the 1 star reviewers have the same issue. Even keeping it in the same place gives different readings by +/-5.

I really like this one and haven't had accuracy issues (I leave it on tile in the same place for every weigh in).

u/joshcb7 · 2 pointsr/loseit

I've had this one for a while now. It's extremely accurate.

u/zirge · 2 pointsr/keto

This one has treated me well for 2 years https://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Digital-Bathroom-Technology-Elegant/dp/B00F3J9G1W

Ignore all the bells and whistles on other scales. Bodyfat measuring is horribly inaccurate on scales.

u/WeldingHank · 2 pointsr/loseit
u/misoranomegami · 2 pointsr/loseit

I don't know about reliability or what not, but I saw an add for [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Digital-Weight-Technology-Pounds/dp/B00F3J9G1W) scale on Amazon the other day for $20 and it goes up to 400 lbs if you're just looking to have a digital scale at home.
It really depends on you though. I like being able to weigh myself in the privacy of my own house, after using the bathroom in the morning and before eating anything or putting anything on. I just accept that it's going to go up and down and at time significantly.

u/justintrains · 2 pointsr/nSuns

Honestly, just go buy a scale. They aren't that expensive. You don't have to have a super fancy one.

u/Kasegauner · 1 pointr/keto

I got this one off Amazon a while back. Highly rated, fairly cheap, pretty accurate in my experience.

u/Avaries · 1 pointr/xxketo

I've been using a scale I got from 'Etekcity' on amazon for $15 (currently at $18) and it's been working wonderful! Definitely one of my more favorite scales, especially for it being so cheap.

I was recently shopping for a scale, and had some of the same questions.

I've heard the ones that try to estimate bodyfat percentage (or anything else besides weight) are extremely inaccurate, so it's probably not worth it. If you want to track bodyfat, using calipers and a 3 site skinfold test, and being consistent about the 3 sites and how you perform it, will give you better relative measure of your own bodyfat percentage than the scales that use bioelectrical impedance (BIA) to estimate body composition. The skinfold test isn't particularly accurate for absolute bodyfat measurements (comparing your bodyfat to someone else's), but it is much better at estimating change over time than BIA (notice in the link I provided, for changes over time, BIA was the worst of all of the methods tested, including BMI). Even still, the error over time in the skinfold test is in the range of 4%, so it's not very good for tracking whether you've gone from 20% to 18%, but it would do fine for tracking a change from 25% to 15% if you test it once every couple of months.

Based on that, I decided to find the cheap scale that seemed to be the most accurate according to reviews and had a nice visible display. This one fit the bill; it does one thing, tell you your weight, and seems accurate enough.

You don't need that much precision, as your bodyweight will fluctuate throughout the day due to water weight, how recently you've eaten and how recently you've taken a dump, etc. A rolling average of a couple of days measurements is always going to be better than a single measurement.

u/Ounceman · 1 pointr/loseit

If you’re standing on it the same way, in the exact same spot, it shouldn’t do that. The digital scale I have gives me the exact same weight no matter how many times I step on and off. And I like that once it locks in, the number locks until a few seconds after I step off. So I don’t have to even look down until I’ve been on there a few seconds looking straight ahead.

For what it’s worth this is the one I’ve used the past 15 months with 100% consistency, no calibration needed.

Hey thanks! I do plan to eventually do it. I actually went to the gym a few weeks ago... wanted to start up a regular schedule for it, but haven't had the motivation to go again.

I use the scale listed below https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3J9G1W?ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00&redirect=true&psc=1&pldnSite=1, but it's clear as opposed to black (not like it really matters).

u/Rashkh · 1 pointr/loseit

I bought this scale for weighing myself around February of last year. Works great, super quick, and dirt cheap.

I've also bought this food scale in May and it's also been working great for food, tea, and coffee measurements. Being very cheap also helped. It's smaller than it looks though and so may not work for you.

Yeah, it sounds like you need a new scale 🤔

I got mine on Amazon and it has 4 sensors. As long as I have it on a hard surface it doesn't matter how I stand on it. I even tried weighing myself multiple times standing differently every time and it always settles on the same weight down to the 1/10th of a pound. If you're interested, here's the link.

Digital scales have a minimum threshold for measuring a difference in quantity. For example, this scale lists a graduation of 0.1kg.

u/LeaneGenova · 1 pointr/xxfitness

I use this one: http://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Digital-Weight-Bathroom-Elegant/dp/B00F3J9G1W?ie=UTF8&qid=1465318826&ref_=lp_85968011_1_2_s_it&s=hpc&sr=1-2

It seems to work really well, and it's accurate at all weights, I've found. It's apparently the highest rated on Amazon, which also tells you something. :)
