Crested geckos technically do not need a heat source. I live in a particularly cold area so I use a heater to buff into the higher 60's in the winter (just to be safe). If you go the heat route do not use a regular heat lamp bulb. Non light emitting ceramic heat bulbs are a must. Also never use a heat lamp without a thermostat like this one to regulate its temperature.

Glad I could help! I think reptiles are way cuter than mammals. /r/aww is so lame... nearly all of it is puppies and kittens...

The only thing I'd be concerned with with the red light, is that if the light does disturb his sleep, he might be sacrificing warmth to get to the darkness. (Same reason snakes need two hides, one on the hot side and one on the cool side.)

Depending on your house temps, you might look into a CHE (here's an example). But I do warn you, those things can get pretty darn hot, so be cautious. The plus side is that CHE's last forever, unlike incandescents ("red bulbs" included).

How cold does your house get, exactly? He might be okay with a simple under-tank heater.
