Fallout Trilogy - 3 Pack Compilation
Fallout - It's the year 2161, 84 years after a two-hour-long war that destroyed most of civilization. Mankind soldiers on, living out a hardscrabble life on the surface or holing up in great Vaults built inside caves. You're a member of Vault 13 somewhere in Southern California, and the Vault Overseer's got a job for you - find a replacement water purification chip within 150 days, or your home is doomed.Fallout 2 - It's been 80 long years since your ancestor, the Vault Dweller trod across the wastelands. As you now search for the Garden of Eden Creation Kit to save your primitive village, touch choices and even tougher consequences await you.Fallout Tactics Brotherhood of Steel - A departure from the character-heavy RPG style of traditional Fallout games, Interplay's Fallout Tactics - Brotherhood of Steel is instead a squad-based tactical RPG, utilizing both turn-based and real-time mechanics. As part of a split faction of the Brotherhood of Steel, the player controls a team that attempts to grow and expand across Fallout's barren wastelands by recruiting outsiders to embark on combat-heavy missions. I sill play through both of these every few years. The best part is that they've gotten even better since they were released due to the cult following.

Modders have gone through every line of code in these games and fixed all of the bugs that originally released with the game, and even revealed hidden features with unofficial patches for both Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. And I highly recommend the high resolution patch for both Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 for better graphics.

I'd also like to give a shout out to Fallout Tactics. It doesn't have the same open-world RPG elements as the first 2 Fallouts, but it has better and more interesting combat mechanics. Definitely worth a play if you liked the other 2.

$10 on Amazon for all 3 games! (note that it may take a bit of tweaking to run on Windows 7 machines. You can also just run them in an XP virtual machine)

That doesn't make sense in this context. Stop trying to pad your amazon link spamming account with faux genuine posts. You're just tacking shit onto the top comment using a "reddit meme" to fill out your karma to look legit.

Edit: For those looking at his history, he cleans out most of his amazon links retroactively so it doesn't look obvious when someone investigates further.

Edit 2: Here is the deleted comment from the fallout thread, it led here, grabbed the screen capture from the google cache, here's the permalink to the deleted comment. As you can see, i commented 2 down from that, so that's why I remember it so well.

Also, I'm literally waiting for paint to dry right now, so that's why I'm spending this much time on something this stupid.

The Trilogy is $18.49 on Amazon, $6 each at Good Old Games (GOG), or $10 each on Steam, and I occasionally see it in Meijer or Walmart for $10-15 when they are clearing things out.

Start with Fallout 1, of course! The actions of the Vault Dweller are really important to the overall plot of the later games. Do make sure you play through Fallout 2 as well though, because gameplay-wise it improves on everything started by the first. New Vegas has SO MANY references to Fallout 1 and 2 that are really easy to miss if you haven't played them.

I also am running Windows 7 64 bit, and had no problems that a quick google search wasn't able to solve. I think there were a couple problems here and there with color conversion, but there are easy-to-use mods available to fix it.

This is the version I bought, and it runs fine on my machine.

If I'm not mistaken, I think gog.com has them for cheap as well, and they're probably optimized even more for a modern OS.

If you mean in-store I have no idea. But they have this on amazon.

Some of my favorites...

  • The Baldur's Gate series by BioWare and its spin-offs built on the same engine. You can get them all in a $20 DVD-ROM here. An early precursor to Dragon Age.

  • Neverwinter Nights is the next step from Baldur's Gate, before Dragon Age. Amazon has a cheap box set with all sequels and expansions.

  • Fallout 1,2 and Tactics... they're not FPS like Fallout 3 but rather top-down RPGs like Baldur's Gate. Again, Amazon has a cheap box set (just make sure you don't buy the censored European version).

  • Diablo II and its expansion. Get the Diablo Battle Chest to play it along with Diablo 1. The upcoming Diablo III plays a lot like the originals, so D2 will get you prepped. TorchLight is also a similar game, developed by some ex-Blizzard people I blieve.

  • Of course there's Warcraft (not the MMO World of Warcraft) and StarCraft to get you into real-time strategy games. There are Battle Chests (box sets with expansions) for WarCraft III and Starcraft 1. StarCraft II is also out but it's not complete yet. (A Battle Chest for Warcrafts 1 and 2 also exists but it's out of print and expensive now.)

  • All Most of the Sim games (SimCity, its sequels and its sister games like SimTower). Avoid most of the post-EA Sim games like The Sims, SimCity Societies and Spore. There are good non-Maxis, SimCity-inspired games like Cities XL and Tropico. Worth checking out sincee the "real" Sim series has gone to shit lately.

  • If you want to get into MMORPGs, World of Warcraft (WoW) is the king for a reason. You can play it, and its copycat Rift, for free up until level 20. Star Wars: The Old Republic is a SW-themed WoW copycat, that plays nothing like the original BioWare Knights of the Old Republic games. Guild Wars is also a favorite... developed by ex-Blizzard peeps, you buy the game retail but don't pay a monthly fee. There's a number of other free-to-play MMOs out there, but they're mostly crap. Also, some pay MMOs are crap, too.

  • Many western RPGs developed for PS3 and 360 play better on the PC (meaning, with higher graphic capabilities and a mod community), including: Dragon Age Origins and 2, Mass Effect series, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim. There's also PC ports of Fable and Jade Empire. You can usually connect a USB Xbox 360 controller if you want gamepad controls.

Good Old Games and Steam are good resources for finding PC classics on the cheap as well as being patched to work on modern PCs (Windows 7 64-bit).

Fallout 1 and 2. They sell them in a set with fallout tactics (I didn't care much for tactics) Amazon Link

Hmm, it used to be on Gog.com, but I just checked and it seems to have been removed there as well.

There is still this: http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-Trilogy-3-Pack-Compilation-Pc/dp/B001V9PTVE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396571000&sr=8-1&keywords=fallout

Many years back, I bought the game at Target. I don't know if they would have it or the collectors edition. I would check online. Here's a copy on Amazon:

I don't think you can beat many of the RPG's for depth (in terms of content, immersion, etc) so I'll stick to those.

Baldur's Gate series, Fallout series (the older ones especially!), Icewind Dale series, Dragon Age, Mass Effect - in short, basically anything from Bioware. If I had to choose one among that list it would probably be Baldur's Gate 2 - it isn't easy to convey how deep the game is so just check it out and see for yourself.

A lot of these games I mentioned are older and are available cheaply in collections (talk about value for money!). You may need to do a little bit of tweaking to run them on Vista or Win 7 but it is easy to find directions online with a little bit of searching:
Baldur's Gate Box Set $19.99 on Amazon.com
Fallout Trilogy $16.61 on Amazon.com
Icewind Dale Collection $20.98 on Amazon.com

I'd probably also recommend Morrowind (from Bethesda) and Oblivion, though I'd recommend Morrowind over Oblivion if you had to pick one.

If RPGs aren't your cup of tea, I also have a short list of shooters that offer tactical depth in single-player and/or develop their game worlds well:
The Orange Box (HL2 + Expansions), Far Cry (trust me on this one it is actually a decently long FPS that can be quite engaging and tactical), Crysis (if you have a strong enough PC to run it, you'll find it offers some very intense and involved firefights).

This

u/WhoMouse · 1 pointr/patientgamers

I got both, with Tactics all together for fairly cheap. The "Fallout Trilogy". I already owned 2, too. :) Best way to do it IMO.

u/TheDudeFromOther · 1 pointr/gaming

Not much interest in this thread, so thanks for the list. :)

Fallouts 1 and 2: ordering this soon.

I actually own an unopened copy of Knights of the Old Republic. I'm installing it as I type this.

D2: just shook my addiction; reason I'm looking for something else.

Half Life(s): another recognizable name that I'd forgotten about. Definitely going to check it out.

Portal(s): same
