You could always get one of these and have it tucked away on the side of your desk. Seems like a nice way to keep the comfort of a 60% or TKL without sacrificing functionality.

Buy the keypad here

Buy key switches here

Buy soldering iron here

Open keypad, desolder switches, resolder new switches, put back together, done. It's basically what I did with my keyboard (plus blue switch on spacebar and brown on escape.)

Just how small do you want to go? You could do something like Jack's Planck or Atomic keyboards. Or you could get just a number pad, if you wanna go miniscule.

Hey dude.

Thanks for the awesome write up. Over the last week I've been mulling over getting into my first board. I too was super overwhelmed by all the information and the learning curve. I was intimidated by the really cool custom boards but knew I was nowhere near that level yet. Just yesterday I finally pulled the trigger on these two Items Filco Majestouch Numpad and Cooler Master MasterKeys S. Im pretty excited to see where things go. I'll eventually get some keycaps.

I do a lot of number entry at work and wanted to have a left side number pad, hence the two items. I saw this board online DSI LEFT HANDED USB KEYBOARD but was a little turned off by MX-Red only and then it being a board from 2012. I'm not sure how quality has changed the last 6 years and I wanted to go with MX-Browns for my first board. Maybe a little foolish to buy two items, but I was afraid of how hard it may be to switch from red to brown.

I think I'll eventually get into a full custom board where I can have a more compact layout but still have a Tenkey on the left side. We'll see how that goes. I'm hesitant to get a bunch of tools that would be needed to make a board. Hopefully more left side tenkey options will come out some day.

Anyway, tldr: just got my first board, looking forward to the adventure. Thanks for the info and the kind welcome to the community.

For some reason, nobody wants to make a completely bog-standard mechanical keypad. It's absolutely infuriating. Any keypad you buy is going to make you decide.

There's a Filco keypad. But unlike a normal 108-key board's keypad, it has a double-aught. (This apparantly seems to be a thing in Japan, to reduce the number of zeroes one has to enter when dealing with currency.)

There's also the Adesso. But if you note, they give you an Escape key in the main cluster, which shoves all the keys over by one, while adding an entirely superfluous Print Screen button.

So I'm going with this option. Custom PCB.

The Filco FKB22MB taken straight from the /r/mks wiki :)

I use a Filco numpad with MX Browns, placed to the right of my mousepad. It's a much better arrangement ergonomically for me.

u/Savij · 2 pointsr/battlestations

I just buy a separate peripheral like: 10-keypad. I also have a full keyboard if I really need to, but I like the smaller keyboards for the shortcut keys and especially gaming since my mousepad is gigantic.

As much as I want you to realise that you don't need your number pad(actually you might actually need it) I will attempt to help you with your purchase.

Max Keyboard Nighthawk X7 this is a keyboard that meets all of your requirements plus it has really good build quality. In addition you will also get a nice wrist rest pad. A nighthawk with browns was my first board, and I still use the wrist pad that came with it. Also note that you select it to be blue backlit in the options.

Also just so you know, you can get a mechanical number pad eventually if you ever want to move to a TKL or 60% board.

Hope this helps.

It looks like the answer is yes: Filco Majestouch, TenKeyPad, Tactile Action Numberpad FKB22MB - looks like this has mx brown switches. not bad -- tempted to pick one up myself!

u/trnelson · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

This really should be posted in the sticky, but I'll attempt to answer anyway (since I had already read your question).

You will probably want Brown switches. Not a lot of full keyboards available under $100, but there are a few. If you can get to a local store (Microcenter, Fry's) that sells mechs, I recommend trying them out, but you'll probably want Browns. Maybe Reds, but likely browns. Browns are fairly quiet, and adding o-rings really makes them quiet.

If you want a cheaper entry point, and since you're a numbers guy, you could go with something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-TenKeyPad-Tactile-Numberpad/dp/B000MGBPNI/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1398179938&sr=8-16

I have a full Filco Majestouch Ninja with Brown (tactile) switches and it's phenomenal. The build quality is just incredible, and that link I posted would give you a good idea of the feel before going for a full keyboard. Also, if you decide you like it, you could purchase a tenkeyless board afterwards and get the best of both worlds. I considered going that route but I just like having the tenkeys on my board, and I'm not picky.

Hope that helps. But do repost in the sticky and see what others can offer. Ripster isn't being mean; we really do just see a lot of these questions lately (and we're always happy to help). :)

Good luck!

It's a num pad. I think it's this one: http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-TenKeyPad-Tactile-Numberpad/dp/B000MGBPNI . I could use one of those myself!

u/poopymacmac3 · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I need the 00 key like this keypad: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MGBPNI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
to repeat it's press, because it doesn't, and I need it to be one 0 not 2.

u/kschang · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Don't think there's a reprogrammable numpad unless you make one yourself.

Filco's official one is nice, but doubt it's reprogrammable. And it's cherry brown, not blue.

There is also this Tesoro numpad, available in blue, red, brown, or black But it's probably Kailh, not cherry.

There's also this Hacker blue switch black numpad w/ floating key Kailh blue.

u/fedtothewolves · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

this with autohotkey?

u/platipress · 1 pointr/keyboards

My desk is small, and it feels better to have my mouse closer to the keyboard. if I ever need a numpad, I'll just get this.

u/Zecaf · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Well, I use this in MX Brown http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-TenKeyPad-Tactile-Numberpad/dp/B000MGBPNI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422062195&sr=8-1&keywords=filco+keypad not the best design Filco did and some report problems on Mac (didn't try on mine, it's on my PC) but AT LEAST it use proper keycodes. :x

u/Akka94 · 1 pointr/osugame

Hmmm, I've been looking everywhere. Most keypads were out of stock, like 99% of them lol. As someone told you already, you'd better check Massdrop every once in a while to see if any keypad goes on sale, even though they are pretty rare. Or you could even end up getting a cheap mechanical keyboard! Anyways, my only find worth mentioning was this Filco. It's only Cherry MX Browns, though.

Edit: Found two keypads that were previously on sale on Massdrop - Leopold and [Keycool] (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/keycool-22-key-numeric-mechanical-keypad?s=keypad?mode=guest_open). Keycool doesn't use Cherry switches anymore unfortunately.

Edit 2: Checked /r/mechmarket for you too. Could only find the one from here that is still on sale. Leopold with MX Browns once again. -___- ^I ^should ^do ^something ^profitable...

u/WickedGoogly · 1 pointr/hardware

could you use a Flico numberpad?

u/SirChurch · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

QuickFire TK is a middle ground option. You get the approximate size of a TKL but with full number pad functionality. http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-QuickFire-TK-Mechanical/dp/B00A378L10/

Filco makes a MX Brown number pad http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-TenKeyPad-Tactile-Numberpad/dp/B000MGBPNI/

u/acdcvhdlr · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Here, and here.

Edit: The Filco has browns and the other has blues.

Depending on if he wants a whole new keyboard, or just a mechanical pad

u/lord-carlos · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I just ordered a Jelly Comb for ~17 British money and they send it to skandinavia. Maybe also to Canada? Edit2: They don't :(

Is there no service where you can order stuff in the US to, that will re-send it to canada? I know there is stuff like that for EU, not cheap though.

Edit: What about those: Tesoro or Filco ?

u/9fiftyfive_ · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Is this a good (or at least decent) numpad?

u/asrenos · 1 pointr/osugame

I'm guessing that's Alps copies as switches, would not recommend that model in particular.

this would be way better.
