This bundle is the best option, otherwise you'll be paying like 20 bucks for the main game, then another 20-30 for the expansion.

I recently went back to FFXIV and the amount of content there is truly staggering, especially when you remember that ff14 and SWTOR were more or less contemporary games (launched around the same time)

It's worth noting that wherever you purchase from, there's a Steam version and a SE version. Steam version lets you pay through Steam Wallet. Whichever version you buy, you need the same one if you buy the expansion.

Yo dude, I would highly recommend buying the game + expansion off Amazon! It's under $30 there, so you'd be paying over double by purchasing it on steam. Buying on amazon also lets you choose where you purchase further packs, if you purchase on Steam, you're restricted to only buying expansions from Steam.

There's the amazon link to the bundle you need to buy, it includes both ARR and Heavensward. All servers are cross platform so you can play with PS3/4 players as well as PC, you just have to have individual licenses if you decide to do both (Can't buy PS4 license and play on PC, for example).

The newest expansion, Stormblood, arrives in June and offers two new playable classes: Samurai and Red Mage. you will only be able to play these classes if you've purchased Stormblood, though.

Having access to Heavensward will give you the Au Ra race at the beginning, but you will not be able to play the Machinist, Astrologian, or Dark Knight jobs until you reach Heavensward content.

Right now you can play a free trial of FFXIV. The playtime is unlimited, but there are restrictions that are applied (can't level up past 30, etc).

That said.

If you bought CE on steam, you probably only bought the base edition of the game for what looks like $32 on steamprices. You did get some in-game cosmetic items, though.

This nets you more playable content if you decide to play, and you also save a bit of money!

I can more or less guarantee that you probably won't miss the in-game items the CE gives. A few other things...

• Buying the base game "ARR" comes with a 1-month sub. I recommend activating it at the end of your trial. You can play on the same character, just do it within 90 days of the trial ending!
  
• You can buy a "basic sub" for $13/mo, one month at a time. Normally if you buy a "normal sub", it'll be $15/mo for 1 month, or $14/mo for 3 months, or $13/mo for 6 months. The only meaningful difference is "how many characters can I make?" And for FFXIV, which lets you play all classes on one character, it's not much of an issue.

  Depending on how many hours/wk you can play, I'd say 2 months is a pretty good amount of time to play it. The core story (it's a very story-based game, and the writing is excellent, especially later on) takes 70-100 hours to complete. Lategame gearing to the current patch takes 10-30 hours to complete. There's tons of other side content, and to briefly experience most of it will take another 100-200 hours. There's very grindy content that can easily last 200-400 hours if you're interested, but that's a niche thing.

I recently purchased the Heavensward + ARR retail bundle off of Amazon. It seems to fluctuate in the USD$25~30 range. The same version is available from SE's store for $30. I didn't see any bundle similar to this on Steam.

What's the deal with this? Is this the same?

the pc version and the ps4 version are treated as separate entities in mogstation. there is no way around buying both copies of the game. once in the game though, there is no difference besides control scheme.

Linking a bundle with both the game and expac included below that is only $50. You will want to have the expac around the same time you hit level 50 at the latest, that way you get exp while doing the lvl 50 story missions. For an MMO ffxiv has a great story but the longevity in the game comes from doing end game content with the people that you meet in game. Whether that is raid, crafting, questing, or w/e, the people you are playing with will mainly be doing things that require you to be max level as a group. FFXIV is a story driven mmo, but you will always need to have the latest expansion to get a good and fulfilling experience from an MMO since that is where people will be spending their time.

Keep in mind that this was after a 30 second google search, if you shop around and wait time it right you will likely be able to get both for 30 or 40 bucks.

Now is a good time as any to get back in! The new expansion is slated for June 20th, so you have plenty of time to get caught up.

Accounts are cross-platform, so if you simply resub your old account and log in with it on PC, your Black Mage should be there.

Edit: As the other two have pointed out, you have to get a license for PC as well. This will also include 30 days. Look for "Final Fantasy XIV Online" bundle deals, you can usually find one for $20 somewhere. Here it is on Amazon ($30 currently)

For PC: To start playing you need just A Realm Reborn, which will grant you all content from 1-50 including the 2 years of patch content before Heavensward released. The only thing you will be missing out on is creating an Au Ra character that you can start the game as from level 1.
Then you need Heavensward, which grants access to the 50-60 content, with the new land (6 zones), 3 new jobs and the 2 years of Heavensward patch content. It also lets you either make an Au Ra character, or change your character's race to an Au Ra.
There is also a bundle where you may buy both the base game and the expansion together, but there is no bundle with Collector's Edition goodies.
You will need both collector's editions if you want all the digital goodies, or you can buy upgrades to both editions in order to get them, whenever you choose to.
On Steam it looks exactly the same. The only downside is that you are bound to buy everything on Steam and the box edition codes will not work with Steam. This makes it hard if you wish to have the physical collector's editions as their codes will not work with the Steam version and you would need to buy the collector's box and the Steam upgrade for Stormblood, for example.
For PS4:
It's the same as on PC, except the digital PSN codes and the box editions codes can be mixed and matched without issues.

Basically, buying through steam you are always stuck with steam period. If you see a good sale at best buy? Nope. Amazon? Nope. You are stuck with the steam prices. As long as you are okay with that, then steam is fine.

1. you won't be able to apply a EU code to a NA game account. Also, define 3rd party. If amazon, then its okay. If its one of those sites like G2A, those keys are grayish and could potentially result in more trouble down the line.
