It might not be the most popular thing to say in this sub, but if that's all you want it for just grab something like this. It'll sense motion when the door opens and auto-activate the light.

That said, if you want more out of it this isn't what you're looking for! Hope this helps!

Battery powered motion lights? Would have to change batteries as needed. Not stylish enough maybe (although being a new parent, learn that function is going ot have to overtake fashion real soon)

Motion light bulb? No batteries, but requires you leave the light switch on. Also likely dependent on the fixture you have in the hall. There are options on entire new fixtures, too, which probably look better (or at least less obvious), but a little bite more work to install.

Motion ligh switch. Would only work if you are near the switch, though (not sure what "easy access in the dark" means). You could install this yourself, its 3 or 4 wires tops.

Motion may not be the way to go if you have pets

You could always just get another screw base. They're like $2.

Or you could get a motion sensor meant for an outdoor fixture like this and just screw an LED lamp into it.

Maybe try one of these:

It's basicallyy a motion detector you screw into an existing light socket. Couple bucks over $15 but it is as cheap and easy as you're going to get.

Here is your solution. Just screw it into the light fixture and you're done! My garage is pretty dark, so having a motion activated light is pretty nice.

Another option, plug and play. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003QKS4Z4/

Like the previous poster said, something like this would work well and low cost. [amazon link](First Alert PIR725 Motion Sensing Light Socket https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003QKS4Z4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Q6v7xb00P0631)

You could use a hub+motion sensor+ smart bulb, but I would only recommend that approach if you will use the motion sensor for something else. Example: if away and motion, send a notification or if night/day set brightness to x/y percent. Otherwise you're probably wasting money and adding more things to potentially break down.
