This is the right advice: what you need is good ear plugs and a white noise machine. Not all ear plugs are created equal, I highly recommend these:

I have this noise machine, and it works great at drowning out traffic/ambient noise. I find it works well in conjunction with the earplugs:

I highly suggest earplugs. I am a light sleeper and noises from neighbors would drive me batty (even when not trying to sleep). I bought these from amazon and they have been a life saver Flents Quiet Please Ear Plugs (50 Pair) NRR 29 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001J4HB1C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_v5HUDbGV8X6DJ

Foam earplugs are really cheap! They will block out a lot of the volume but you will still be able to hear the music and instructor (if they are mic-ed). Like these: https://www.amazon.com/Flents-Quiet-Please-Plugs-Pair/dp/B001J4HB1C/ref=sr_1_5?crid=31CNB8NICL3LL&keywords=foam+ear+plugs&qid=1573046046&sprefix=foam+ear%2Caps%2C181&sr=8-5

That is like the only Winkeyless model I would consider using.

Buy https://www.amazon.com/Flents-Quiet-Please-Plugs-Pair/dp/B001J4HB1C?th=1 and place a post-it note: "take two if you have noise complaints."

Yeah I wear them correctly. I wear them at night too, though a different brand. The ones I have worn while riding are Howard Leight LaserLite earplugs. I like them a lot.

At night I wear these, which I would not wear while riding because they block out practically all noise.

I've tried Etymotic, standard fit, and they just ended up hurting my ear canals. Unfortunately they only have "standard fit" and "large fit". With no option for a smaller fit I had to look for an alternative.

I really lie the fit and dB reduction of the Flents ear plugs and bought a jar of them: http://www.amazon.com/Flents-Quiet-Please-Plugs-50-Pair/dp/B001J4HB1C

Use foam earplugs.

Maybe not that exact brand, but something similar.

They're soft. Fold them in half and stick the bent end into your ear, makes them easy to take out.

I've used foam ear plugs for entire shifts working construction with heavy machinery. So they're pretty good.

If you think you'll look weird, try putting headphones on top of them.

These foam ones work best for me: https://smile.amazon.com/Flents-Quiet-Please-Plugs-Pair/dp/B001J4HB1C/ref=sr_1_40?keywords=sleeping+earplugs&qid=1574567688&sr=8-40

Re-usable silicone ones can also work.

I tried these Amazker 60 pair ones first but they put too much pressure on my ears, I can feel it when I wake up. Only using those as backup and for motorcycling.

I think I'll try Howard leight low pressure foam ones next.

Just buy whatever. I bought these ones and they're fine.

The best disposable foam earplugs I've found are Flents "Quiet Please".

I carry several pair, including in my range bag for when I bring along new shooters who don't already have their own earplugs.

This honestly seems like a pretty good option. If you liked driving the Miata, there won't be too many convertibles that drive similarly but are quiet.

The one thing you need in college is a good brand of earplugs Studying, drunk roommates, trying to sleep, I used them at least twice a week in college.

I wear them anytime i go to a show. Normally the sound quality is just fine, doesn't ruin anything for me. i hear everything fine, it's just not as loud.

i wore some like this last night at a concert, everything sounded great

Those will solve any issues with noise. they're foam earplugs that you squeeze before you put in your ears and then they expand and block out everything. I sleep next to the loudest snorer ever.

The smoke issue is a bad one. Smoke makes me sick - someone should get that guy to go outside for a smoke like a civilized human being.

Real life pro tip: buy some cheap foam earplugs off Amazon, and cut them in half. They will dampen the sound enough to prevent your ears ringing, are slim enough that almost no one can tell you’re wearing them, and you’ll have about 50 pairs for $10. Do not push them too far in your ear though.
