I'm reading this book called Rat Race to Financial Freedom.
It details on how to create a plan for your early retirement.
Rather an decide on a ballpark figure using rough estimates, it takes into consideration the inflation, your current cost of living and the ROI on your investments.
So say if you're yearly cost of living is 3L. Then accounting for inflation (at say 8%) it will be 3.8L the next year and so on. You gotta calculate this figure up until the year that you want to retire. So if it's 2035... the amount would be 1CR, 2CR whatever (do the math). This is the amount you would need.
At the same time you would be making investments to reach this corpus amount. Now this investment (if made wisely) would be fetching you returns of around 9% to 10% (at the minimum). So accounting for this interest, calculate how long it will take you to reach your corpus.
