SF is safe enough for the most part. The most crucial advice is common sense. For instance, If you can, avoid dark alleyways at night. Try to keep to well lit areas if walking alone in the evening. Always be aware of you surroundings (keep your head up), and don't feel too self conscious about the social awkwardness of crossing the street, or even changing direction, to avoid those who appear to pose a threat. I carry this self-defense keychain because I don't feel safe when I walk across campus at night. (Also because Illinois doesn't allow you to carry handguns.) There's also something to be said about a tightly rolled newspaper. A tip my uncle taught my sister and I from his misspent youth. When a newspaper (or magazine) is rolled up tightly. A strike to the throat or head will hurt enough to give you time to run. It won't hold up to prolonged use, but for a split second weapon, it'll do the job.
