Forwards, Backwards, Upside down, and the 'drummer stretch'.

Goes over the lot of them, so I do 5 out of the 13 they have listed.

Here is the "drummer stretch", take a stick, hold it in both hands about shoulder length apart, palms up. Rotate one wrist around, rotate the other around. It feels awkward and a little hard to describe but you can find pics/video examples.

I also have a couple hand therapy balls of different hardness that I'll squeeze randomly during the day. You can squeeze in between your fingers, different ways, very healthy for the hands. This is the exact product I have:

You can definitely get gel stress balls, and also solid rubber ones. My favorite ones are those that are filled with sand or beads with a thick rubber coating over them. I just love how they feel.

The trick is to put 'therapeutic' in your search terms. It will tend to spit out more of the physical-therapy type ones and less of the cheapo foam ones.

Those exercises are a great start. You can also search youtube for videos for exercises, this video series seems to do a good job. I would also highly suggest looking up rotator cuff stretches and exercises (second most common injury site for MT's besides the hands). You can also ask your teachers for some suggestions.

If you don't mind spending a little money, the hand workout I personally use are taken from this book by Aaron Mattes active isolated strengthening, and the exercise handout that came along with this product. Aaron Mattes also has a very thorough book on isolated stretches.

Also this is a helpful free website on self-massage if any particular muscle group starts to ache you should start massaging it routinely before the tension level increases any further.

A couple days ago, my son grabbed a ball and shoved it in my mouth. I spit it back out at him and he giggled harder than I've ever heard from him! This went on back and forth for 15 minutes.
Maye not such a fun story for you, but it really made my night!

I had the same problem after 3 months of intense training in parallettes, my wrist started to hurt in the TFCC area, I could no longer use the parallettes and it hurt a lot to support my weight in the hand flexed to the ground.


For a month I did the Antranik training http://antranik.org/wrist-friendly-modified-bodyweight-routine/ also I made a full deload week before and after this training. I also did a lot of rehabilitation work (massage with lacroose ball , wrist curls, rice buckets and exercises with this balls:

I have improved a lot from that. It is very frustrating at the beginning but I took this as an area of opportunity to improve in other areas such as flexibility, core and legs.

I've experienced similar pains as well from piping all day. I think it was just a big shock to my hands from straining all day. I also would ice my hands a bit with a little massage after work to be able to rest up for the next day.

I'm pretty sure OP is referring to the flexor muscle in the web of the hand.

Which makes sense, most people do not develop this muscle. If you pinch your thumb and first finger together, you can see it flex.
It's a little guy, and when you work it, it hurts, it gets sore, etc

You are building muscles you didn't normally use before is all, keep at it!

You can try out the various hand exercise balls and spring thingies to work out your hands when you aren't playing guitar.
Be sure to stretch out your wrists, hands and fingers before AND after playing.
